Yakuza Series Has Sold 700k Units in the First Quarter of the Fiscal Year, Making It Second Place to Sonic the Hedgehog

The Yakuza series of games has started picking up steam recently since the release of Yakuza 0 and the Yakuza remastered collection, putting the whole series in the west for the first time. The crime drama series has also been picking up steam thanks to the release of Yakuza: Like a Dragon, which is the first Yakuza game since the original on PlayStation 2 to feature an English voice track. However, it looks like the series is exceeding Sega’s expectations, as they announced some interesting findings of the series in their latest financial report.

As most companies do, they will publicly reveal their numbers during the end of each fiscal quarter. The reveal of Sega’s numbers shows that the Yakuza series is one of the company’s biggest hitters, sitting second to Sonic the Hedgehog. With the series now exceeding 300,000 copies from the previous year’s fiscal quarter, this leads to many implications about where Sega will take the series next.

What Does the Future for the Yakuza Look Like?

The incredible success of the Yakuza series means that Sega will start taking the series seriously in the west. This can be seen by the marketing going into the spinoff series game Lost Judgement, which is also getting an English voice track. However, this might give some insight into the previous issue with the Yakuza series’ spinoff game.

There were issues between Sega and the talent agency for the actor playing the protagonist for Lost Judgement, the main issue being that they didn’t want the game on PC. Due to the modding scene, the Yakuza series was one of the more popular series on the PC. Sega will most likely try to find common ground with the company. They’re aiming to put the game on PC and want to make more, seeing that Judgement is the last bastion of the original gameplay from the main series titles, being that Yakuza: Like a Dragon has moved to turn-based combat.

However, with the obvious success of the Yakuza series for Sega, their plan to make more games in the series or port some of their other Japan-exclusive titles are more likely than ever now. The Yakuza series has two other games fans know about, and one of the studio’s games isn’t on the PC yet.

The games missing from the series are the Ishan and Kenzan games, a spinoff series that tells the historical Samurai story with the series characters playing the part of the cast in resemblance only. The last Ryu Ga Gotoku game that hasn’t made the jump to PC but was released in the west was Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise. While it did have a release on the PS4, it hasn’t jumped to other consoles like the mainline series.

With the success of Yakuza, other games could make their move to PC and the west. However, it’s up to Sega to decide that, as of now, with Lost Judgement’s PC version in limbo, hopefully, an understanding can be reached, leading to the series continuing and the game’s PC debut.
