WePlay Esports Dota 2 AniMajor Announced
Before colliding at TI10 in August, the best teams in the world will first have to face off in Kyiv, Ukraine at the newly announced WePlay AniMajor! The second (and final) Major of the 2021 DPC season is scheduled to take place from June 2—13, with a very respectable $500,000 on the line along with 2700 DPC points. The cash prize is always a nice bonus, but what teams really want are those oh-so-important Dota Pro Circuit points that’ll allow them to qualify for the biggest and most prestigious tournament of the year.
What is the WePlay AniMajor?
Eighteen teams will clash off, although they’ll be doing so without a live audience to cheer them on. The COVID-19 pandemic is still as dangerous as ever, although it is starting to subside in certain parts of the world. Still, Ukraine isn’t doing all too hot in that regard, so it’s best not to risk anyone’s health and overall safety.
As the name implies, WePlay’s very first Major will be heavily inspired by anime, although what that means and how it’ll affect the broadcast and its aesthetic still remains to be seen. In any case, kudos to WePlay for always coming up with something unique and idiosyncratic — if only other TOs would follow suit!
WePlay AniMajor | Who’s Qualified?
Out of the eighteen teams that are scheduled to compete, four will be from Europe and China, three from SEA and Eastern Europe, and just two from North and South America. They will compete across three different stages in a myriad of formats. You can check out the full tournament structure by clicking here.
At the time of this writing, only the following three teams have secured their tickets to Kyiv: Team Spirit (CIS), Virtus Pro (CIS), and Alliance (Europe).
All in all, this is quite an exciting moment for fans of competitive Dota 2. After a fairly long drought, TOs and Valve are finally starting to deliver, and while they certainly took their sweet time, it’s better late than never!
