Vex, the Gloomy LoL Mid Lane Mage to be Released in September

The oft-rumoured LoL mid-lane mage Vex — the one with a gloomy, jaded nature — finally has a release date: September. Riot’s release cadence warrants a lot of praise and commendation. The speed at which they’ve been churning out content (during a pandemic, no less) is worthy of the highest respect!

Akshan, the Rogue Sentinel was released mere weeks ago. Yet there’s a brand new champion on the horizon. One that we’ve known very little about despite her being linked not just to Viego but to the Ruination.

“As long as everything goes as planned, Vex should be coming out in September. We’re working on getting her source of power—aka her shadow— just right in-game, which is why she’s releasing a bit after the Sentinels of Light event,” said Ryan “Reav3” Mireles, lead champions producer.

The shadow Reav3 is talking about is Vex’s main source of power — it is through this shadow that she can tame and harness the Black Mist. Vex was initially supposed to release before Akshay, but the dev team thought it’d be best to switch things around. They had to create some “new tech” to “visually sell” Vex’s powerful nature. That means it is still unknown, but it sounds like she’ll be a fairly unique champion from a VFX standpoint.

Expect Yet Another Powerhouse

If Viego, Gwen, and Akshan are anything to go by, it’s fair to assume that Vex will upend LoL and its meta immediately upon release. Riot has a knack for releasing (either slightly or downright severely) OP champions, and Vex should be no different in that regard. She was designed and developed with the utmost care and attention to detail, and we can’t wait to see what she’ll bring to the table upon release!

However, whether she’ll be enabled for the upcoming World Championship in China remains to be seen. We aren’t all that optimistic, especially if she ends up releasing in mid/late September. Riot wants to have as stable a meta as possible, which means keeping surprises and potential curveballs to a minimum.

Regardless, we’ll be able to test her out in just a couple of weeks once she’s shipped to the PBE, so stay tuned!
