Twitch Rivals and Epic Games Host First Fortnite Mobile Tournament
Fortnite battle royale is an impressive game for doing something that is unlike any other game in existence. It is not only available on every modern platform out there including Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, PC and Mac, but it even has mobile versions of the game that are also on par.
Epic Games decided to create a mobile version of the game that is just like its bigger platform counterparts and it has millions of downloads across the App Store and Google Play for iOS and Android devices, respectively. It is a massive version of the game that is played by tons of mobile gamers around the world.
What is so impressive about the version of the game is that it is the same game that everyone else is playing minus Save the World. That means that you can queue up with one of your friends on a console or PC and still play in the same match as them, even though you are on mobile.
This does come with some issues, of course, with the different controls, technical limitations and overall power of the device. It is still available for those who want that. This is a far cry and a massive improvement over other games.
Games like PUBG Mobile and Call of Duty Mobile are named as mobile games and are treated as such. They aren’t connected to their mainline entries in the series, which is different from how Fortnite on mobile devices works. It is the same game with the same title and everything.
Fortnite Mobile Twitch Rivals Tournament Announced
That is why it is so unfortunate that the game has never really had any tournaments or esports events of its own until now. Epic Games and Twitch have partnered up to announce the first-ever mobile-specific tournament that will be hosted this week.
The Fortnite Mobile Twitch Rivals tournament is the first-ever esports event that is official and focuses solely on the Android and iOS versions of the game. It gives players who excel at the mobile version with its touchscreen controls a chance to earn some cash of their own.
It will be hosted today, Monday, December 9 at 1 pm PT. Players will have the chance to check out some of the best players of the mobile version of the game in the Fortnite Mobile Twitch Rivals tournament. This was announced by the official Twitch Esports Twitter account recently.
Twitch Rivals is a series of esports tournaments that happen every single week in gaming. It varies each time what the game will be but Fortnite is no stranger to the series. Popular players like Tyler “Ninja” Blevins (before moving to Mixer) and many more have been participants in previous iterations.
But this is the first that will be focusing on the mobile version of the cultural icon game. How it will work is that there are only 12 players who will be competing in the event. The small number of players will allow for some stiff competition during the tournament.
How the Fortnite Mobile Twitch Rivals Event Will Work
The Fortnite Mobile Twitch Rivals tournament will not be solos, either, as the 12 players will be divided up into three squad teams of four players each. With only three teams in the entire event, this is going to be quite an unusual event, to say the least, for the first mobile battle royale event.
It will, however, follow the standard Twitch Rivals tournament format of not having the players battle it out directly against one another. Instead, the teams will have three hours to play through the game as much as they can to earn as many points as they possibly can.
Those points will determine where the three squads rank up when the tournament is all said and done. At this time, we know that the Fortnite Mobile Twitch Rivals event will have a pretty solid prize pool of around $20,000 in total prize money available.
That is a decent prize pool considering this tournament is the first of its kind for the mobile version of the battle royale game and that there are only 12 players in total who will be competing. We don’t have much more information about the format or how the prizes will be divided up beyond some minor details.
For instance, we do know that the top prize that will be given out to the first-place squad will be $10,000; half of the total prize money for the event. We aren’t sure how much the other two teams will get, but it will likely be some division of the remaining $10,000.
However, since there are four players to a team, those players will then need to divide up the prize money among themselves in whichever they like. But one great thing about the Twitch Rivals event is that everyone will at least walk away with one prize guaranteed.
All 12 players who participate are going to receive a free Samsung Galaxy 10 mobile device to take home with them. We don’t know everyone who will be participating in the event itself, but it will be a mix of some of the top players on Twitch who play the mobile version of the game.
Who Is Competing and How to Watch
These are the players that we know about currently who will be competing in the event:
- DuckyTheGamer
- Jojo
- RolandGT
- SSNSanta
- Surfnboy
We will have to wait and see who the other seven players will be in the event, and how the three squads will do during the three hours of competition. The Fortnite Mobile Twitch Rivals tournament will begin promptly at 1 pm PT today and will run for around three hours.
You will be able to watch the stream live as it is happening on each of the respective players’ Twitch channels. If there is a player that you like to watch, head over to their channel and follow them for a chance to see how they do during the event, live right as it happens.
Here is hoping that this event prompts more tournaments of this kind for the mobile game, as there are millions of players who are active on that platform.
It is worse still because other games like PUBG Mobile have a very active esports scene that is even bigger than its console and PC counterparts. Given how large the mobile scene is around the world, there is potential for so much more than just this. We hope to see more opportunities like this one pop up soon.
