The Red Door Game Appears, Likely Call of Duty 2020

by in Call of Duty | Jul, 16th 2020

Games leaking on stores online and the like is common practice and something that often reveals a new game announcement early that we didn’t see coming. But then there are situations like the new game The Red Door that has appeared on the Microsoft Store today.

The Red Door Game Appears Out of Nowhere

As noted by PC Gamer, The Red Door is a brand new game that has appeared on Microsoft’s storefront and is coming in the future. You might see that name and wonder what this has to do with the Call of Duty franchise? And we have to say that it likely has everything to do with it.

You see, this mysterious and somewhat creepy game appeared on the Microsoft Store recently. It isn’t likely to be some brand new series or IP that Activision is going to release in the future. It is most likely the secret name and listing for the next mainline Call of Duty game.

That’s right; it looks like we are getting ready to find out more about the Call of Duty 2020 game soon as The Red Door is most likely the codename for the next game in the annualized series. To understand why this is probably the case, we need to dig a little deeper and look at it.

For starters, The Red Door has a rather creepy name and even more disturbing imagery as the art for the title shows what looks to be a keyhole that is colored red and black with a maze of lines inside of it. Overall, the text and everything gives that Stranger Things vibe.

What We Know About This Strange Game

The game is already actually rated by the ESRB, which is rather impressive since that only happens when a game is nearing launch. If this is the Call of Duty 2020 game, it makes sense. Activision claims the game is still coming out this year, even though we haven’t officially heard anything about it up until this point.

The game is rated M for Mature, which is standard for Call of Duty games, so nothing is out of the ordinary. Then, the store listing makes it abundantly clear that Activision is the official publisher for this strange game, just like is the case for every Call of Duty game.

This is where things start to point towards this being part of the long-running series; otherwise, it just looks like some brand new title that Activision is getting ready to announce. There is the fact that it is labeled as a shooter game, which fits the right genre for what we think this is.

The description that we know about the game is cryptic and bizarre, leaving us not much room to go on. Here’s what it says: “There is more than one truth. If you go looking for answers, be ready to question everything and accept that nothing will ever be the same. The Red Door awaits, do you dare step through it?”

How Red Door Connects to Call of Duty

What is intriguing about this situation is that there is one final piece of information that the game store listing reveals. It is set for Xbox One and will have an approximate download size of 81.65GB. That is highly specific for something that isn’t even announced at this point, leading us to believe that it is quite far along.

To be clear, this is no mere coincidence. It is certainly not the standard video game leak on a store. This is most likely done on purpose by Activision to tease players, create posts like this, and eventually reveal the actual game soon.

Thus far, though, there has been nothing that reveals that this is actually in the Call of Duty franchise. Things get a little bit more complicated. The Red Door appeared in the PlayStation database recently, and its tag is quite promising.

In the tag, it shows the text “COD2020INTALPHA1.” This is interesting as the literal abbreviation for Call of Duty plus the year 2020 is noted in the ID for the new game. If this isn’t giving away that this mysterious game is the next Call of Duty game, we don’t know what will.

Other Details and When We Could Get the Call of Duty 2020 Announcement

While it doesn’t quite give away anything else about the next Call of Duty game, we know that this red door of some kind has been referenced in the Black Ops series in the past. This is something heard in the “Paint it Black” song from The Rolling Stones used for announcing Black Ops 3.

The song references a red door of some kind, which is quite coincidental that this codenamed game just so happens to use that same phrase. Given the timing of this all, it is likely that Activision is getting ready to announce this game that will probably be the next Black Ops game.

Rumors up until this point said that Sledgehammer Games and Raven Software were working on the game together. Still, development issues between the two led to Treyarch taking over and making this game the next Black Ops title, perhaps a soft reboot like Modern Warfare was last year.

This red door could play a part in the Black Ops game like being the name of the Zombies mode or something like that. Or, it could just be the codename of the game used by the developer while working on it.

Regardless, it looks like we will see the Call of Duty 2020 game announcement very soon. Considering that this has been noticed on the Microsoft Store, there is a chance that the game could be announced next week during the Xbox Series X game showcase.

That event is supposed to focus on first-party Xbox games, but it doesn’t mean that we won’t see a third-party title. It would be interesting if that happens, though, since PlayStation has been getting most of the marketing and exclusivity deals lately after Xbox had it originally.
