The 2022 LoL World Championship Will Still Take Place in North America
The 2022 LoL World Championship will still take place in North America — barring any huge, unforeseen twist. With Riot having to relocate this year’s Worlds from China to Europe, many North American League of Legends fans started worrying and, well, not without good reason.
Fortunately, their fears were quickly allayed.
“There is never a dull moment in the events business. It’s going to be a crazy month but I’m excited to help deliver another amazing Worlds for our fans. I’m *really* hoping for a COVID free event planning cycle for Worlds in North America next year,” said Tom Martell, Riot’s Director of Operations.
It’s not an official confirmation per se, but it’s probably the best we can get at this point in time.
There Are Still No Guarantees
Now, this could still change depending on the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic (and a slew of other factors), but by the looks of it, Riot is still committed to organizing the 2022 LoL World Championship in North America — come hell or high water.
The last time NA hosted the World Championship was all the way back in 2016. Five whole years have passed which is pretty much an eternity in competitive esports terms.
It was the year when Albus Nox Luna broke onto the international scene with their crazy picks and bravado-fuelled style of play; the year when SK Telecom T1 still reigned supreme, with Samsung Galaxy and ROX Tiger breathing down their necks. Back then, the LCK dynasty was at its peak, and it seemed like it would last for as long as competitive LoL itself. No one could’ve foreseen the rise of the LPL and its many seemingly unassailable giants.
So, needless to say, it’s about time another World Championship took place in North America! We hope that NA fans will once again have the opportunity to see the best teams in the world collide for pride and glory — without any kind of pandemic looming over everyone’s head!
