Tekken 7 Sales Surpass 4 Million Copies Sold Worldwide

by in Fighting Game News | Jul, 22nd 2019

Bandai Namco announced on Twitter that Tekken 7 sales have surpassed four million copies sold worldwide to date and counting. This makes it one of the highest selling and most popular fighting games this generation and a likely success for Bandai Namco.

In the announcement tweet from the developer and publisher, Bandai Namco thanked fans for continuing to support the game to the point that it’s now reached this massive milestone in Tekken 7 sales. It encouraged fans to keep those fights going and to invite friends to join in on all of the action.

Tekken 7 Sales and Artwork Details

In addition, Bandai Namco released an updated release of the official artwork for the game in celebration of more than four million copies sold. This updated artwork shows the nearly full roster of characters in the game, dressed up nicely and celebrating the accomplishment.

What’s great about this gorgeous 2D artwork is that it’s been updated to include most of the season two characters that were added. With the addition of season two we’ll see: Armor King, Craig Marduk, Julia, Anna, Lei, and The Walking Dead’s Negan introduced to the game.

Oddly enough, characters like Armor King can be seen in the official art but it does look like Negan seems to be missing from the group or at least very hard to see in the picture. Regardless, it’s a beautiful piece of art that would go well as a desktop wallpaper for fans of the fighting game.

The Tekken 7 sales are impressive for a fighting game these days, considering that it only launched a little over two years ago in June 2017 worldwide for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. In addition, the last time that Bandai Namco updated fans on sales, it had reached three million units sold in October 2018.

That means that the sales for the game have reached at least a million copies in the last several months as it hasn’t even been a year since it reached more than three million copies sold. Because of this, it is sure to grow even more, especially if a season three of characters happens in the future.

How Tekken 7 Sales Compare to Rest of the Series

So, how do the Tekken 7 sales stack up compared to previous entries in the series? There are seven main entries in the series with definitive versions and a couple of spin-offs beyond the seven main games. Having reached more than four million copies sold,  it’s officially the fourth highest-selling game in the series.

Before reaching four million copies sold, previous entry Tekken 6 held the honor of fourth place with around 3.5 million units sold. The game still has a good bit to go if it’s going to claim the third place spot as Tekken 2 currently holds the spot with around 5.7 million copies.

The second highest selling game in the series at this time is Tekken 5 if you include all of its versions, which brings it to a total of 8.2 million units. In the first place, the best selling game in the franchise is Tekken 3, which dominated the fighting scene back on the PS2 with 8.5 million copies sold worldwide.

Tekken 3 is also one of the best-selling fighting games of all-time, helping to make the franchise be the second highest selling fighting game series after Nintendo’s exclusive Super Smash Bros. series. The addition of The Walking Dead’s baseball bat-wielding antagonist Negan in season two was a nice surprise.

The future of the game is uncertain at this time since Bandai Namco has been quietly updating the game with new cosmetic and other options but hasn’t given details on the a possible season three of characters. Be sure to check back here for a potential season three or new Tekken 7 sales announcements in the future.
