Stand Up Comedian Sebastian Maniscalco Revealed Who He’s Playing in the Mario Movie

by in General | Aug, 11th 2021

Not Much information has been put out there by Universal and Illumination about the progress of the Super Mario Bros movie, while things have been “making good progress” that’s all Nintendo and illumination have been able to tell the fans about the film. However, some more information about the film has gotten fans into speculating about the film once more, due to one of the Actors on the project talking about their involvement with the movie.  Posted on Twitter by @Eponge2L, they linked a video on YouTube. During a podcast with Bert Kreischer, Sebastian Maniscalco mentions during the podcast that afterward, he has to go into the studio to do some voice work for the Mario Bros movie. “I’m in the movie Super Mario Brothers, an Animated Movie… I’m playing um, Spike, their boss.”

Who’s Spike in the Mario Bros Series?

This has many fans wondering if the Spike mentioned by Sebastian is in fact the game character Foreman Spike, who was Mario’s Boss in the NES game Wrecking Crew. There is a possibility that the spike mentioned by Sebastian could be something completely different, possibly being a reference to the Mario enemy by the same name, however, another leak would suggest that another character in the Mario world would support the comment from Sebastian.

A Leak from the French site, Nintend’alerts, Said that a source they know working closely on the film told the site that the character Donkey Kong is going to make an appearance in the film, and since the original Donkey Kong games take place in a construction site, this would imply that Foreman Spike would make an appearance.

However, the mention of Donkey Kong should be taken with a massive grain of salt, seeing that the only claim that the character will make an appearance is based on what Nintend’Alerts said, rather than providing any proof.

Regardless, if the Spike mentioned by Sebastian Maniscalco is indeed Foreman Spike, this provides a lot of implications for the way that the film’s plot is going to play out, as the plot of the Mario Bros movie is going to be extremely important to the way that the movie will be received.

With the information provided, there are a few possibilities that could unfold for the film’s plot, as many fans were worried about the film’s plot, stating that the worst outcome would be the “kid gets sucked into the game” plot, with the Mario Brothers playing second fiddle to a character from “The Real World”. However, with the possibility of a character like Foreman Spike, making an appearance, this could mean that one of the original plot threads from previous Mario Media would make it into the film. That specific Plot thread is the “Mario Bros. travel to the Mushroom Kingdom” plot. This plot was used in A Lot of previous Mario Media, being that the characters were originally Plumbers from Brooklyn, with the brothers being sent to the mushroom kingdom from their job site. This was used in the Super Mario Brothers Super Show and the 1993 Super Mario Brothers Live-Action film.

The possibility of Mario and Luigi working for Foreman Spike, and having Donkey Kong appear, with the three of them being sent to the Mushroom Kingdom, would make for a decent plot. Another option is that Donkey Kong isn’t in the film until the end, with the Marios being sent to the real world, and Donkey Kong appearing for a Mid end Credits scene. While both of these options are likely, it also begs the question of, Who’s going to voice the Mario Brothers? As Charles Martinet hasn’t been approached for the film in any capacity, and with Sebastian Maniscalco possibly being cast as Foreman Spike, one of the fan’s biggest fears would come true, and that is that the film’s cast is going to be voiced purely by celebrities. This isn’t the best thing for the fans of Mario, but illumination is a company that will line their films with a star-studded cast to get viewers in their seats, being done purely from a marketing standpoint, and not thinking about how the movie could be made faithful to the original film. However, this is all speculation. The Mario movie is slated to come out sometime next year, and fans are wondering what’s going to be next for Nintendo’s films, as they’ve mentioned that they’re looking to continue making animated projects about their IP’s with help from illumination, enough to make the company’s CEO a “non-executive outside director” for the gaming company as a whole. Regardless, the film is coming out, and fans are cautiously optimistic about what’s going to come in the coming months, as the movie hasn’t been shown off in the slightest, and approaching the release year fast.
