Sonic The Hedgehog Celebrates 30th Anniversary With Sonic Central
Sonic Fans have been waiting for new news on what the titular hedgehog has been up to for the past year, especially with the 30th anniversary of Sonic on the horizon this week. However, 2021 has been seemingly Sonicless, as SEGA has been tight-lipped about what news they have planned for the 30th anniversary of their mascot, until today with the announcement of Sonic Central.
Sonic Central, and What to Expect
Sonic is getting a Nintendo directed styled presentation, which is far from strange seeing that other companies have started down the path of online presentations through live streaming on multiple platforms, such as Sony with their “State of Play”. Posted on the official account for Sonic, Sega announced that on May 27th, there will be a news presentation by the name of Sonic Central. Seeing the company reveal multiple projects and updates about their current dealings for the blue blur. The post mentions that during the presentation, they will be showing off not only projects but partnerships and events during the presentation.

What this could mean for sonic fans Is a lot. As the 2nd Sonic movie is in production at the moment, with multiple leaks from the set showing off that not only will sonic be accompanied by Tails for his second outing on the silver screen, but will also be making friends with Knuckles. This is big for fans of sonic as the first movie largely followed the baseline for sonic’s first game, and fans expected the sequel to include more than just sonic, with tails appearing as a character in the end credits cutscene voiced by the original voice of tails in the game. Sonic fans also expected the movies to be a trilogy of sorts with the third movie being based on Sonic 3 & Knuckles. However, with knuckles inclusion in the title, it appears that the second film is going to include both of those storylines in the feature.
Sonic also announced recently that a show was being developed in the wake of multiple shows being made by Netflix. Sonic Prime, as the show is titled, is supposedly coming sometime in the near future. However, with the departure of Rodger Craig Smith as a voice actor, fans are worried about the current voice of the character, as Rodger has been the voice of sonic since 2010. This departure of multiple sonic cast members including The voice actor of Amy as well means that the roles of the characters will be changed yet again, with Sonic being replaced with someone new. However, nothing about this has been revealed to the public who Rodger’s replacement will be.
Recent Sonic News
Sonic has also had some leaks online as well for new titles in the series. Two games have been leaked by the online marketplace Sogamely, which showcased not only a remaster of Sonic Colors, being the game that came out after Sonic Unleashed. But more recently, the addition of a Sonic Collection. While this is still a leak and should be taken with a grain of salt, A Sonic Collection has been done twice before.
Two sonic collections have been released onto consoles previously to the leaked one, with the Sonic Mega Collection including Sonic 1, 2, 3 & Knuckles, Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, and Sonic 3d Blast. In the collection. Allowing fans to play all of the genesis titles on their GameCube or PS2. Sonic’s Second collection, the Sonic Gems Collection included some of the games that didn’t make the cut, such as Sonic CD, Sonic the Fighters, Sonic R, and Sonic Triple Trouble, to name a few.
While entirely possible that player’s could see the announcement of a Sonic collection making it’s way to PC and the Switch, what games that are included is entirely up for debate. With fans clamoring for remakes and remasters of the Sonic Adventure titles, what could possibly be added to the new collection that hasn’t been added before?
Sonic seems to have a lot going for himself this year, and with the presentation coming within the next few days, fans are wondering what Sega is going to do to bring Sonic back once again after the critical failure of Sonic Forces in 2017. Perhaps players will see a new Sonic title, or possible remasters and remakes coming during the presentation.
