Seagull Announces Retirement From Competitive Overwatch
We’ve got some pretty unexpected news from the Overwatch scene last night, and it’s regarding one of the most beloved players in the entire scene – Brandon “Seagull” Larned. He announced his retirement from competitive Overwatch, as well as a return to full-time streaming.
Brandon has been a staple presence in the Overwatch scene, ever since he came over from competitive Team Fortress 2. He joined the former EnVyUs roster in September last year when they were still considered the best Western Overwatch team. To many, EnVyUs always lacked a top-tier projectile-based DPS player, and Seagull fit in perfectly.
Unfortunately, the pressure to perform at such a high level for prolonged periods of time took a severe toll. Over the course of his professional career, he gained 40 pounds and developed sleep apnea. Brandon also cited the need to come back to the thousands of fans who got him to where he is today, and that playing competitively and streaming at the same time just isn’t a viable option.
How this will affect Dallas Fuel next year remains to be seen. Seagull was one of their best and most consistent performers throughout the inaugural season and was an exceptional player who was able to flex between two crucial positions and against all the odds excel at both. Throughout Stage 4 he was statistically the best D.Va in the League, whereas his Hanzo play ranked him in the Top 3, regardless of how well his team was performing.
Losing such a key, versatile player is a big blow for Dallas, but seeing how they were able to step up and improve near the very end of the competitive season, fans shouldn’t be too worried.
That said, his optimism and easy-going personality helped them tremendously when they were struggling throughout the first three stages of the Overwatch League.
