The new Rocket League progression update went live today across all platforms. The update focuses on how and when you earn experience points (XP) and how you can play with friends online.

Rocket League’s ranking system desperately needed an overhaul, and luckily enough, it has finally happened. The previous progression system that Rocket League had in place topped out at level 75, which came with the ‘Rocketeer’ title. It also required each level requiring significantly more XP to level up. Thanks to the new update, it will remove the level cap and flatten out the current amount of XP you need to progress between levels. Everyone who has earned XP will have their XP automatically converted over to the new system. Also going forward with the new progression update, XP can only be earned while playing online matches.

Another feature in the progression update is the new level-up rewards mechanic. Rocket League is replacing the random drop system with a new level-up system. After every time that you level up in Rock League, you’ll earn a random item of uncommon rarity or better. Users will still be able to trade up these free rewards for rarer content like painted cars or boosts. Crates will not be a part of the level up drops, but rather drop the same way they currently do.

There is also a new way to gain experience with the new progression update. The new XP update brings new bonuses that’ll help you level up faster. These bonuses are currently: match completion, consecutive matches, backfill and weekly wins. Three of those are self-explanatory, but to earn the backfill XP, you will need to join a match that is already in-progress in complete it.

The progression update also introduces ‘Clubs’ to Rocket League. It is a new in-game social feature, where it lets you and your friends organize and compete as a team. Users can name their club, create a custom club tag, and have up to 20 players on one team.

Minor items highlighted in the progression update are avatar borders, real-time filtering text, new achievements, a particle details video option, and bug fixes. The avatar border is a new customization item that lives alongside your platforms avatar and player banner.

The final item of news that came out from the progression update blog was that Rocket League is releasing its RocketPass next week.
