Riot Games Announces Belgian and Dutch Leagues for League of Legends
League of Legends’ European scene is going to see a significant change if you’re in the Benelux region. That area will still be considered one region, but it will have two separate Leagues. Get ready for the new League of Legends Belgian and Dutch Leagues.
It means there are two paths to qualify for the European Masters, where the greatest European League of Legends players gather to compete. Lol Esports teamed up with 4Entertainment to make this fantastic opportunity happen.
We are proud to announce that @riotgames has chosen @4EntHQ to create and develop national League of Legends leagues in both Belgium and the Netherlands.

Level Up, Europe
Starting in the 2020 season of competitive League of Legends, both the Belgian and Dutch Leagues will have six teams. They plan to expand this further down the line once it is proven strong, no doubt. Players in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg are welcome to play in either of these Leagues.
Altogether representing the Benelux region, it will offer the highest level of competition for players in these countries so that they can do battle amongst each other. There will also be an “Open Tour” to come.
The Open Tour will be a series of connected tournaments to be a platform for these up and coming League of Legends players. It is a perfect way for these European players to prove their worth and show what they can do to a broader audience. There is more details coming, which we will, of course, share with you guys.
For the European audience, there will be tailor-made content for the local fans. The Dutch League will broadcast in Dutch, and the Belgian League will broadcast in Flemish and French.
Belgian and Dutch Leagues: Format Is Key
These Leagues have identical structures and several features of note.
- Two Regular Season Splits – Best-of-One format, €7,500 prize pool per split
- Four team playoffs leading into European Masters qualifiers
- National Finals once a year – crown the best of that country. €10,000 prize pool per event
The Benelux Premier League (BPL) is going away as a result and replaced by these two new events. It is a brand-new way to qualify for the European Masters, and though there isn’t more information yet, we’re still very excited.
Europe already has a history of fostering their talent and having them grow, instead of importing players from other regions. It will only make that stronger, and I cannot wait to see new teams crop up out of this. Granted, I will probably not be watching them live as I cannot speak any of those languages, I’m still hyped.
We all want more awesome teams and fantastic matches. That’s what the Belgian and Dutch Leagues are going to offer us. 2020 is going to be a hot year for League of Legends esports, and for the Benelux Region in particular! Will other regions follow suit? We can only imagine!
