Resident Evil Gets a New Anime Series on Netflix

Resident Evil makes its return to the screen with a Netflix animated show releasing on July 8. Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness brings back iconic characters Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield, who survive a bioweapon outbreak in the White House in Washington DC.

The Trailer

The official trailer starts with recalling an unnamed soldier character who has reoccurring nightmares about a battle he fought overseas. With this, Leon chimes in with his recollection of the events of Resident Evil 2. Leon was supposed to start his first day of work at the Raccoon City Police Department. However, when he arrived, the place was ravaged and taken over by the undead masses infected by the T-Virus, a bioweapon made by the Umbrella Pharmaceuticals Corporation.

Leon is then sent to the White House to investigate something. However, the trailer doesn’t discern exactly that. Leon manages to run into Claire, the sister of Chris Redfield. Claire accompanied Leon through Resident Evil 2’s campaign. Both of them escaped from Raccoon City with Sherry Birkin, the daughter of one of the main monsters of the game, William Birkin. G. Raccoon City bombed via a nuclear warhead soon after the trio’s escape. Based on the trailer, it seems like there’s more to what’s going on than meets the eye. The trailer also shows Claire working her own investigation into the outbreak following Racoon City’s.

Soon enough, an outbreak does occur while Leon and Claire are trapped inside the White House. It’s up to them to find out what’s going on and what’s coming after them. The final part of the trailer shows a hulking bioweapon that says, “I will show you true fear.”

More Details About Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness

While the trailer looks downright amazing visually, the only thing it provides about the show is the main premise and characters that viewers will meet during their stay with Leon and Claire. Leon is joined by Jason, the man at the beginning of the trailer, and another character named Shen Mei, who is part of Leon’s team.

Another question fans are asking is where it fits into the canon of the games. It’s animated by TMS Entertainment, the studio behind classic anime like Lupin the Third and Detective Conan. The show is also being supervised by Capcom’s Hiroyuki Kobayashi, who worked on the original Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry, Resident Evil 0, DMC4, RE4, and RE6, as well as the animated series Devil May Cry and the CG film Resident Evil: Degeneration.

The show seems to be in good hands as Capcom has put one of their most knowledgeable in the producer’s seat for the show. Leon and Claire’s English voice actors are also taken from the remake of Resident Evil 2, with Nick Apostolides reprising his role as Leon and Stephanie Panisello reprising her role as Claire.

With Capcom’s tight licensing control over the Resident Evil series, fans should remain cautiously optimistic for the release of Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness. However, this isn’t the only show tied to the Resident Evil series coming out for Netflix.

The Resident Evil Live-Action Show

Another show with the working title of Resident Evil is coming to Netflix. It’s a live-action show which follows two characters: Jade and Billie Wesker. They’re the children of Albert Wesker, a prime antagonist in the series up until Resident Evil 5, where he eventually perished for the final time.

The live-action show takes place in two timelines, one where the children live in New Raccoon City, wary of what their father might be hiding from them. The second timeline takes place 30 years into the future when most of humanity is extinct. Jade is seemingly the only surviving sibling left. This would contradict the canon of Resident Evil as in Resident Evil 6. Wesker has a son named Jake Muller, someone who plays a massive role in the game’s story. However, the contents of the live-action show are subject to change. The show was confirmed within its universe, rather than borrowing from the other live-action films and the official Resident Evil canon.

The show’s state is currently unknown, as the COVID-19 pandemic halted it. Fans looking forward to more Resident Evil shows won’t have to wait long as Infinite Darkness will be available on Netflix on July 8.
