PUBG Is Getting Rid of Locked Loot Crates

by in General | Nov, 19th 2019

What’s worse than spending Battle Points on loot crates and not getting what you’re after? Spending Battle Points on loot crates and it’s freakin’ locked! That’s a real thing that happens in PUBG, but they’re changing their loot crate monetization.

A significant change is coming to PUBG this December, and makes the business model far fairer to its players.

Locked Boxes Are Finished

On December 18th, PUBG locked loot crates will be removed forever. When purchasing random crates with Battle Points, there’s a chance you can get a locked crate. It means you spend your hard-earned BP, only to have to spend money on keys.

That may be the worst system since mobile games introduced shards of characters or cards. The worst part is that it’s a random chance! PUBG has made strides in lowering the probability of this occurring, but what would have been better if it had never happened in the first place.

Those who have these in their inventory can still buy keys for them, at least. At least it’s only some crates and not all crates that are locked. They discussed this in a recent developer blog, as well.

“Through player feedback, we’ve found that more often players do not get enjoyment out of opening crates as they currently exist.”

One of the cool things about PUBG is that you can sell these boxes on the Steam Marketplace. But can you imagine a world where you buy something with real money in an auction, then must spend more real money to try and open it for something cool? That’s double-gambling.

The developers discussed PUBG locked loot crates in this blog:

“Patches have been carried out to continuously lower the probability of obtaining locked crates when purchasing a random one and items with special features have been added to locked crates to give them additional value for those who wish to purchase them, but we’ve learned that this issue cannot be completely resolved in this manner. Because of this, we’ve decided to discontinue the release of new locked crates and phase out the distribution of existing locked crates as well.”

It is an utterly ridiculous system. I would love to know who thought it was a good idea in the first place.

What’s Changing?

More of the preferred skins will appear in lower tiers. Top-to-bottom tiers of crates evenly distribute AR category skins. The visual quality of skins also improve to make sure they’re worthwhile.

PUBG also improved the quality of items found in middle-tier crates and increased the odds of acquiring these mid-tier items. Though they also improved the odds of the high-tier items showing up, they’re still challenging to get. That means you’ll still likely have to buy plenty of boxes, but at least they won’t be locked!

Players can still sell their locked boxes on the Steam Marketplace too. If you have a locked box in your inventory, you can purchase a key for it. Making real money off an online game potentially is such a cool concept. It sounds like it won’t really harm the economy of the game. More players are likely to buy the boxes and try to flip them for cash.
