Overwatch League Sponsors May be Leaving Due to Blizzard Lawsuit

The Overwatch League may be seeing sponsors leaving, thanks to the recent lawsuit. We recently talked about how T-Mobile’s branding disappeared from the Call of Duty League, and that might not be the only problem facing Blizzard’s esports scene. It sounds like some other major sponsors for the Overwatch League, namely Coca-Cola and State Farm, might also be leaving. As of now, they’re “re-evaluating” the deal they have in place, but there’s no telling where it could actually lead. As it turns out, people can’t just be awful without consequences.

Taking A Step Back, According to Overwatch League Sponsors

The Blizzard lawsuit has led to people stepping down (J. Allen Brack), walkouts, demands, and sponsors calling their partnerships into question. Then recently, T-Mobile’s branding disappeared from the Call of Duty League. Whether or not they have actually parted ways remains to be seen. But the widespread harassment and toxic nature of the Blizzard HQ is bringing consequences to the company. According to statements from both State Farm and Coca-Cola, the two companies are reassessing the situation and monitoring how things are going.

The peculiar thing about the Coca-Cola sponsorship though is Bobby Kotick’s role in both companies. He is the CEO of Blizzard, and he is potentially also responsible for some conflicts of interest. On February 16, 2012, Bobby Kotick was named a director of The Coca-Cola Company. It’s very interesting to see someone with so much power in a company also being a sponsor of another company the same person is involved with. A spokesperson for Coca-Cola said earlier this week that the company is “aware of the allegations surrounding Activision Blizzard.” They are monitoring the situation, and this could lead to a split.

The statement also said they are working with Blizzard, and taking a step back to revisit future plans and programs. On top of that, State Farm is “reevaluating our limited marketing relationship with the Overwatch League”, according to another statement. State Farm has requested that none of their advertisements run during the weekend matches to boot. So could we be seeing a mass exodus of sponsors leaving the Overwatch League? It’s entirely possible.

The lawsuit is not a problem that’s going to be going away anytime soon, and continues to have consequences for Activision-Blizzard.
