Overwatch League Scheduled for 2021 Spring Start

by in Overwatch | Nov, 24th 2020

There’s finally a bit of news regarding the 2021 season of the Overwatch League. Blizzard didn’t reveal a whole lot ever since the 2020 champions were crowned, and with many unconfirmed rumors circulating online, no one knew quite what to think or feel. Fortunately, Jon Spector, the vice president of OWL, has just released a video talking about what fans can expect coming into 2021.

Overwatch League 2021 UPDATE — BlizzConline, Season Launch, Tournaments, NA/APAC

As Jon noted in the video, a lot of it is still uncertain, given the ever-changing state of the pandemic and the world we now find ourselves in. In other words, take everything you read with a bit of reserve as it could heavily change over the coming weeks and months.

  • The 2021 season of the Overwatch League will start off in spring. This will give Blizzard a bit more time to plan things out and set up a solid enough foundation. It’s a bit depressing that we won’t have any top-tier competitive Overwatch over the next five or so months, but this decision is quite reasonable given what Blizzard had to go through this year.
  • Tournaments will make a return, akin to what we had throughout 2020. They will, however, be slightly “optimized.” What this truly means and how it’ll affect the overall experience still remains to be seen.
  • Blizzard plans on keeping the current multi-regional structure of the Overwatch League, therefore ensuring player health and safety.
  • The best teams in the world will once again converge at the end of the season and duke it out for glory (and a sizable cash prize) much like they did in 2020.
  • An off-season tournament series will happen in a couple of months so that fans have something to watch before the regular season begins.
  • The Overwatch League will make an appearance at BlizzConline next February. That event will feature the San Francisco Shock taking on a myriad of other pro players and community figures in a “series of Overwatch-related challenges.”

Overall, we didn’t get a whole lot of new information, but at least we know when the 2021 season of the Overwatch League is scheduled to begin. In any case, Blizzard is hard at work and will surely release an update the moment they have something new to share!
