Overwatch League Cancels South Korea Matches for Weeks 5-7
The Chinese homestands in the Overwatch League canceled and moved to South Korea due to the coronavirus outbreak. Many fans anxiously waited for Weeks 6 and 7 to see most of the Pacific Division teams play their first matches of the season. Also, where they stand to other teams with a few games under their belts already.
Everyone Is Affected by the Canceled Matches
These fans have to wait longer to see their favorite teams play, though. The Overwatch League announced Weeks 5-7 matches are canceled due to increased cases of the virus in South Korea. How the league will make up these matches is currently undecided. However, the announcement noted more information on when and where matches will take place would come later.
The news put a major damper on the biggest season yet for the Overwatch League. Teams played matches in their home cities this year. Most of the Pacific Division teams have to wait until at least Week 9 to play their first games. Teams such as the Shanghai Dragons have to wait until the Week 11 matches in Los Angeles.
Many fans expressed frustration at waiting so long to watch these teams. Some have called the delay an unfair advantage for the teams affected. Their accusations lay in the fact that these teams will get to watch and develop counter-strategies to all the teams in the league currently playing, while said teams wouldn’t respond in kind since they won’t have any game footage to watch until these teams play.
At the same time, counter-arguments have also arisen. The disadvantage lies with teams who have yet to play, given a lack of experience on stage compared to their rivals.
It’s a tough position for Activision to be in for what was supposed to be the biggest year for the league. We have to wait and see what their plans are to make up for the again-delayed matches. We’ll continue to follow this story as the situation develops over the coming weeks.
