Overwatch League 2019 Season Format Revealed

The new flex time format for the 2019 season will have all 20 teams playing 28 matches throughout four five-week stages. Each stage will have a total of seven matches. As the new format implies, this season will be flexible, with teams only playing between zero and two games per week. The purpose of the flex time is to help players stay at the top of their game by creating more breaks and allowing teams to visit home during the season.

Stage Finals are returning. There are three stages in the season. The top eight teams from each stage make it to the Stage Finals. Unique to the 2019 season is the introduction of a seeded playoff bracket. Divisional winners are seeded into the No. 1 and No. 2 slots, followed by the remaining six teams.

The Overwatch League will now host the All-Star game during the regular season. It’s a change from last season, which took place at the end of the year in Los Angeles. The All-Star Summer Vacation is scheduled during stages two and three in 2019. The vacation will also feature a longer break between stages as well as longer breaks for the players.

The final note about the Overwatch League 2019 season format was about the playoffs play-in. The format for the playoffs is the same as they were during the inaugural season, but now two additional teams also qualify. The two teams earn their spots based on the results of the play-in tournament following stage four. The playoff play-in puts the 7-12th- placed teams in a win-or-go-home bracket.
