New Personalization Options Coming to LoL Before the End of the Year

by in League of Legends | Jul, 16th 2021

If you’ve been looking for new ways to express yourself in League of Legends, you’re in luck — Riot is currently working on a slew of personalization options that will allow players to customize their LoL profile better and show off their uniqueness with more ease! They’re calling this “Progression Identity” — an umbrella term that covers your play style, role identity, Summoner icon, IGN, Prestige Level, rank, favorite champions, and pretty much everything in between.

Riot feels that players still don’t have an adequate amount of freedom to express themselves fully, which is why they’re currently working on the “next generation of LoL personalization.” They’re still in the concept and design phase but have nonetheless decided to give us a sneak peek at what’s to come!

Changes Galore

By the end of the year, players will be able to pick their borders, icons, and a slew of other LoL personalization options currently being developed. Most of these changes are still under wraps, though. Riot will also touch up various little bits and pieces of the overall user interface. The ultimate goal is to reduce visual noise and create a much more appealing, streamlined UI.

This should, in turn, allow players to stand out a lot more whether they’re queued up with friends or are just loading into a game of League.

The design team is currently exploring different options and designs, so consider the concept shown above as something bound to change over time. Still, it’s a nice way to show off what their ultimate goal is: to customize how others see you through new crystals, tokens, borders, and everything in between! It is perhaps a bit overcrowded visually, but they’ll tone it down in time, no doubt!

Ranked Borders and Emblems

One’s rank has always been intricately connected with one’s LoL identity (for better and worse). Riot’s well-known helmets and metallic borders have become synonymous with ranked play, but they’re also somewhat outdated visually. So, in the future, Riot will focus on a more “emblematic wing shape” that will grow in size and complexity from Iron to Challenger.

Prestige Levels

This is yet another aspect of player expression that has been fairly muted throughout history. Riot’s Cody “Codebear” Germain perhaps explained it best: “Prestige Level borders are something that held a lot of promise artistically, but when it came to customization, we dropped the ball. Players who had earned something they had felt resonated with them were no longer able to display that content when they achieved a new prestige tier. First, we’d like to rectify that situation by allowing players to select any of the level borders they feel resonate with them.”

Going forward, one’s prestige level will also evolve (visually speaking). You can check out an early concept down below!

Before and After

New Content Types

Players will also have new and exciting ways of customizing their profiles thanks to Titles (earned through unique action taken in-game), Identity Crystals, and Banner accents. How well all of these elements will mesh together remains to be seen, but there’s a reason for optimism!

All in all, everything written above is still a heavy work in progress, so make sure to send feedback if you’re so inclined and let the appropriate teams know whether you like the direction in which they’re headed! In any case, we’ll get a more thorough update in a couple of months, so stay tuned!
