Age of Empires 4 is Real – New Age of Mythology Scheduled As Well

by in General | Jul, 1st 2019

Age of Empires is probably the biggest and most popular old school RTS out there. The original title dates all the way back to 1997, and the second one to 1999, but they’re both still considered as the pinnacle of the old school RTS niche. That said, it comes as no surprise to see people extremely excited after hearing about a new Age of Empires game finally being announced.

Yep, it’s confirmed! Relic Entertainment is not only working on Definitive Editions of AoE 2 and 3 but also on Age of Empires 4. Or they will be, soon enough. Another rumor surfaced this morning, claiming we’ll get to see a brand-new Age of Mythology game too. You know, the popular mythical spinoff of AoE series.

Considering all that, it’s no wonder old school RTS fans are at the edge of their seats. With the Definitive edition of the best game in the entire franchise (AoE 2) coming out in just a few months, we can’t really blame them.

E3 2019 showed off a few gameplay segments of the upcoming AoE 2: DE and the fans went crazy. I included. In fact, I’m still playing last year’s AoE DE. And I’m having a proper blast with it, if we’re being honest.

New Age of Empires Game | Back in the Esports Sphere?

With all these rumors and announcements surrounding some of the best RTS games the world has ever seen, I guess it’s about time to talk about the esports potential these games might have.

Even though I’m a huge fan of these games, unfortunately, I can’t see them acquiring large enough crowds to become viable in the harsh world of esports. I’m always skeptical as far as RTS esports potential is concerned, and the new Age of Empires game is no different.

Sure, AoE 4 or the brand-new Age of Mythology might be excellent and highly balanced games with dynamic gameplay options (just like the most popular RTS esports title, Starcraft II), but acquiring a decent player base and getting the initial influx of money required for a start in esports is a completely different ball game. Fingers crossed Relic and Microsoft make it happen, but it’s highly unlikely from my point of view.

At the end of it all, I guess we can be happy with the new Age of Empires game announcements and leaks themselves. Now, we finally know Relic Entertainment isn’t messing around. With three and potentially four games in the making, now’s definitely a good time to be an old school RTS fan.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to get back to my AoE DE campaign. Cheers!
