My Little Pony MTG Crossover Announced Called Ponies: The Galloping
Wizards of the Coast, Hasbro, and Extra Life have partnered together to announce one of the most impressive and surprising collaborations to date. Magic: The Gathering and My Little Pony are officially partnering together for some truly special pony promotional called Ponies: the Galloping.
My Little Pony and Magic: The Gathering Crossover Announced
IGN posted the announcement of the three new My Little Pony promotional cards that will be released in an exclusive set together later this month. The promotion will only go on for a short period of time so those who are interested in these cards will want to pick them up quickly.
What’s wonderful about this so-called Ponies: The Galloping collaboration is that profits from the event are going to go towards a good cause. All net proceeds from the sale will be going towards neither Hasbro nor Wizards of the Coast but to the Extra Life organization to benefit the Seattle Children’s Hospital.
This is a wonderful cause that players in the community can be a part of, and the focus on the Seattle hospital, in particular, is no surprise given the location of the Wizards of the Coast offices in that area as well. This Ponies: the Galloping promotion benefits you directly, too, since you get some awesome cards in the process.
There are technically three cards that are being sold through this promotion; we say “technically” because one of these cards has a nice twist to it as you’ll see in a moment. Though there could have been certainly more than that, it is fine to only see these three cards release.
This is because the artists have truly gone all out on the Ponies: The Galloping cards. All three of them are absolutely stunning, featuring quite frankly some of the best art that we have ever seen from a card in the entire franchise to date.
They each rival some of the best-looking cards from the most recent expansion Throne of Eldraine, which already seemed to be at the peak of card artwork with excellent ones like Lovestruck Beast and so on. In addition, there is another cue that these cards take from that set.
While not fully fairy tales in their own right, there is a whimsical nature to these cards that make them actually arrive at a perfect time like this is a set they are supposed to be part of. Lastly, they also do a wonderful job of capturing the characters or stories around them in the cards themselves.
My Little Pony Rarity Magic Card Revealed

The first of these three Ponies: The Galloping cards is the Rarity card. Everyone’s favorite gorgeous, soft-spoken pony has a gorgeous legendary unicorn creature card. It costs three mana to summon her, one of which must be white mana and the other one must be blue mana.
The mana cost is obviously tied into the color scheme of Rarity, in particular, while she has the stats of two/two. Being that she is Rarity, she will benefit players who use her on the field and also have some other rare and mythic rare cards in their deck.
Rare and mythic rare spell cards that you cast will cost one less to cast while Rarity is on the field. In addition, you can spend any extra mana color and tap Rarity to let yourself reveal a My Little Pony toy that you own to the other player.
This is a strange mechanic but doing so will let you gain protection for one target creature on your side of the field from every single color that is on that particular toy. This is a hilariously weird and fourth wall-breaking mechanic that is interesting and somewhat useful at the same time.
Let’s say, you have someone like Rainbow Dash as a toy, for instance. Show that off to your opponent and you suddenly have a creature that is immune to basically every color in the game except colorless, possibly white (depends on how you look at it), and black.
My Little Pony Nightmare Moon Magic Card

The second card that players will receive in the Ponies: The Galloping charity promotional event is Nightmare Moon. She, too, is a legendary creature but is actually a black alicorn creature card. She costs much more than Rarity to summon at six mana in total, two of which must be black mana.
She has the fair stats of six/six plus flying. Like Rarity, she has a bizarre ability in the fact that so long as it is nighttime while this card is played, Nightmare Moon receives plus two/plus two and gets menace. Suddenly, just playing this card at night will give you an eight/eight beast with menace and flying.
For those who don’t know the menace keyword, this one means that Nightmare Moon wouldn’t be able to be blocked unless it is by two or more creatures. But that still isn’t the end of the abilities that this villainous alicorn has up her sleeve.
You can spend six mana (doesn’t matter which colors you pick) and you can transform Nightmare Moon. It also makes it clear that anyone can activate this ability or help you pay the mana cost to do so (more on this in a bit). And of course, them helping you pay the cost makes them your friend.
Nightmare Moon Transforms Into Princess Luna

This is where things get interesting. Nightmare Moon is actually a split card that has one card on one side and the other card on the other side. When you activate her transform ability, she suddenly becomes none other than the original version of herself Princess Luna.
Princess Luna has the stats of four/four and flying, which aren’t that great considering the six mana cost. However, she has a unique ability that allows you to cast spells in an interesting way. You are allowed to choose up to six cards you own from outside the game (so in your sideboard) that has a moon in their art.
You will take those up to six cards and exile them from the game. As long as those cards remain in exile, you are allowed to cast those cards, and your friends may cast them as well with your permission, of course. This makes this a cool card for those multiplayer matches.
My Little Pony Twilight Sparkle Card Revealed

Last but not least, we have the star of the show Princess Twilight Sparkle. A promotional set wouldn’t be complete without her getting a card as well and she is a legendary alicorn creature card. She costs only two mana to summon, one of which must be white and the other must be blue.
She has the equal stats of two/two and flying as you would expect. Other alicorns, horses, Pegasi, ponies, and unicorns that you own get plus one/plus one to their stats while Twilight Sparkle is on the field. Overall, those are pretty standard abilities but it is the final one that is quite intriguing.
You can spend five mana with each one being one of the five colors in the game and if you also control Applejack, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, and Rarity, you win the game. Or, as it says, everypony wins the game. This is an interesting win condition card for a number of reasons.
For one, it is quite uncertain how exactly you control the other five ponies except Rarity. Don’t get us wrong, it is a cool mechanic of Friendship is Magic so you win the game if you have all of them but there doesn’t look to be other cards for those ponies.
Because of this, it does make it hard to understand how a player would ever activate that win condition in the first place unless there are more cards in this promotion after all or other pony cards are on the way in the future. From this announcement, though, it does look to only be these three cards.
What Are the My Little Pony Magic Cards for?
Regardless of the way that you look at it, these are three cards that are absolutely brilliant in artwork and tying back to their characters/show, but we don’t really see them getting much use in the actual Standard meta game. It is possible but it is something that we don’t really expect given the silver borders.
As such, there are two main purposes that we can see these Ponies: The Galloping cards being used for. The first is simply collecting them and having them on display or letting them rise in value over time. This is what we expect most collectors to do but you could play with them as well.
We could definitely see these pony cards being used in association with more casual card play like in just matches for fun or even Commander mode. All three of these ponies are legendary creature so they are available for using as your trusty partner in Commander matches.
In fact, you could build fun decks that are centered around the use of all three of them or just one or two. Considering that they have use in multiplayer as well, you could do tag team matches like this where your friend can cast your spells that have been exiled by Princess Luna and so on.
It’ll be nice to see what players do with these cards and, better yet, if this promotion is enough to bring in some new players who are fans of the animated show. Having new players in the game is always a good thing and it would potentially diversify the demographic in the process.
How and When to Pick Up These Promo Cards
If you’re looking to pick yourself up this set of cards, it does look like you will not be able to purchase each card individually. They are being sold in one complete package that comes with all three promotional cards for $50 and will be sold beginning later this month on October 22.
The promotional sale will only last for a limited time and will end early next month on November 5. However, if they sell out before then, the sale will end then rather than on November 5, which is why you will want to act fast if you want to collect these awesome-looking cards in time.
However, that isn’t all that Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro has to sell for this special crossover event. There is a playmat set that comes with three special ones that you can also purchase separately from the promotional card set for $100 in total. If you’re bummed that you can’t use these cards in Standard play, you can at least use the playmats for matches.
Lastly, there will be four different digital card sleeves available for purchase through the digital version of the popular card MTG Arena for $3.99 each. Those pony-themed card sleeves will be available in the game for purchase for a short time as well between October 28 and November 4.
Like we mentioned, all net proceeds from each of these special crossover products will be donated to the Extra Life charity group that is dedicated to raising money for children’s hospitals around the nation in gaming-centric ways. This particular charity event will go towards the Seattle Children’s Hospital.
This isn’t the first crossover event of this kind with Magic: The Gathering either. In the past, there have been other promotional cards like the HasbroCon cards in 2017 that included Dungeons and Dragons, Transformers, and more.
As such, we can expect to see more crossover card events in the future, perhaps, even more pony cards to fill out the three-card collection. Stay tuned right here for those potential Ponies: The Galloping announcements and reveals in the future.
