Matias Leveratto Wins MTG Mythic Championship III in Las Vegas
Magic: The Gathering Mythic Championship III happened this past weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada at the same time as another major event in the community. This was the third championship in this newly founded tournament series, this time focusing on Magic: The Gathering Arena.
Mythic Championship III General Details
For those who don’t know, MTG Arena is the most recent addition to the card game offering a new and improved digital experience for players on PC besides the still outdated Magic Online game. Competitors used the game to battle it out with their best decks against other opponents live and in person.
68 players walked in and only one player walked out as the overall champion of the competition, and that was Matias Leveratto. Leveratto showed up to the day three finals as one of the top four players after defeating and making his way through the other 64 competitors the previous two days.
Compared to the other three players in the top four finals, Matias Leveratto was easily the underdog of the group, especially against undefeated fan favorites like Brad Nelson. However, that didn’t stop him from advancing to the upper bracket finals and defeating Nelson there.
This secured his spot in the grand finals of the Mythic Championship III where he once again faced off against Nelson for the championship trophy. Despite losing to Leveratto in the upper bracket, Nelson was able to crush fellow lower bracket competitor Kai Budde to make it to the grand finals.
Mythic Championship III Grand Finals Results
The set up for the grand finals was simple but effective. The winner of the entire Mythic Championship III would be determined by a best of three match. Considering Matias Leveratto was the upper bracket winner, he only had to defeat Brad Nelson in one best of three match to become the champion.
However, Nelson had it cut out for him if he wanted to win the championship as he had to win not one but two separate best of three matches in a row. This put him at an understandable disadvantage, considering he had already lost once to Leveratto.
When the grand finals kicked off, Nelson came out of the gate kicking and was able to destroy Leveratto in the first round of the first match. The second round looked like it was going to be a clean victory for Nelson, allowing him to secure the first match win as Leveratto was at lethal.
However, in a surprising twist of events, Matias Leveratto was able to get the Nexus of Fate and just barely get his first win in the best of three match. It didn’t stop there, as the third and final round started. Nelson needed to win both that round along with the next full match to secure championship.
But it just wasn’t meant to be as the underdog Leveratto was able to win it all and become the Mythic Championship III champion. With that championship secured, he got the amazing trophy as well as some awesome prizes for winning. He earned a total of $100,000 in prize money and 50 Mythic points for the online game.
As part of the top four players in the Mythic Championship III, Leveratto and the others also got an invite to the Mythic Championship V later this year. With his championship, too, he finally got an invite to the World Championship, the biggest event of the year for the card game, this December.
