MTG Arena Throne of Eldraine Mastery System Changes Announced
The hotly anticipated release of the Magic: The Gathering fall card set Throne of Eldraine is set to happen very soon. But before we can get to all of the new cards, types, planeswalkers, and more, there are some more announcements that Wizards of the Coast has for the community.
What Is the Throne of Eldraine Mastery System?
Part of this includes detailing the MTG Arena Throne of Eldraine Mastery System that will be changing up a good bit with the release of the new set. Also, some immediate changes are happening with the current system worth mentioning.
The Mastery System is an online seasonal pass of sorts, similar to what other online games like Fortnite, Black Ops 4, PUBG, and more have. It brings the game up to par with other online titles, offering unique seasonal rewards.
Participation in the MTG Arena Throne of Eldraine Mastery System is open to everyone. You don’t have to spend a dime to start earning some of the rewards each season. However, the biggest and best rewards are available to only those players who shell out some hard-earned cash for the paid pass.
The rewards for the first pass went live with the release of the previous card set Core Set 2020. That was the inaugural pass for the game, and it was indeed a mixed one. Players lamented many of the changes initially that saw specific challenges and weekly rewards replaced by less than stellar options.
Over time, Wizards of the Coast has worked hard to alleviate the community’s concerns by bringing back old rewards, introducing better ones, and offering freebies to entice the players to return.
This includes this month where logging in during September (before the release of the new expansion), meant that you would get a ton of great rewards. Rewards that are part of the Mastery System include the lovable but controversial exclusive pet and more.
With the release of the MTG Arena Throne of Eldraine Mastery System set to happen very soon, there are new rewards offered. Instead of having seasons like other similar games, the Mastery System focuses on switching out new passes with the release of the next expansion.
Of course, the new MTG Arena Throne of Eldraine Mastery System means that there will be a new pet for players to collect and show off in matches. But before we can get there, there are some immediate changes that you need to know about right now.
When the Core Set 2020 Mastery Pass Ends
The current pass will be coming to an end later this week on Thursday, September 26 at 4 am PT. Once that deadline has passed, players will be unable to earn any additional rewards or XP from the pass until the new expansion is available on the game.
This means that during this window of time, there are a lot of things that won’t be accessible to players. Players will not be able to get weekly wins per usual. Daily quests will not reward experience to players, so don’t bother doing them if you have them. Also, the current pass will be removed from the store.
Last but not least, players will no longer be able to purchase mastery levels for the current set and be unable to spend any earned mastery orbs from this set. Weekly wins and daily quests, though, will reset with the release of the new expansion and everyone will be on equal footing again.
Once the new expansion launches, players will be able to redeem any remaining mastery orbs that they earned on the previous mastery tree. However, they will not be able to spend orbs to complete the mastery tree. No other rewards from that pass will be available once the deadline is up.
There are some known issues as well regarding the current pass. Players who purchase the paid Mastery Pass after reaching level 100 will not receive the level 100 paid rewards. This is an issue that is plaguing users, but you don’t have to worry about it any longer.
Those affected players who deal with this problem will receive the correct items automatically in a future update, and there is no need to contact support anymore. This shouldn’t affect the other rewards that are available from levels 1-99.
New Rewards for the Throne of Eldraine Mastery System

As for the new MTG Arena Throne of Eldraine Mastery System, there are plenty of new rewards for players to enjoy. The most important of these is the Fae Fox pet that you will be able to nab and use in matches as a cosmetic pal to show off and play with.
The Fae Fox is adorable with already some exciting skins and customizations for it that we have seen including some fresh green flame-like armor. It is only the second pet in the game thus far, joining the cat added with the first pass.
In addition to the Fae Fox, players will be able to get the Garruk, Primal Hunter avatar to use, and a card sleeve based on the beautiful key art that was created by Seb McKinnon. We expect majority, if not all, of these items to only be offered to players who purchase the paid pass.
Get ready for the MTG Arena Throne of Eldraine Mastery System, both free and paid, as it is set to launch very soon on September 26 alongside the release of the digital version of the expansion. The physical release of the new card set comes a little later on next month on October 4.
