MTG Arena Patch 0.17.01 August 1 Breakdown
Wizards of the Coast has released the long-awaited MTG Arena patch 0.17.01 August 1 update for the PC version of the card game that is meant to fix many of the issues that have been plaguing users for the last month or so since the launch of the most recent expansion Magic: The Gathering Core Set 2020.
Oddly enough, though, this update does seem to be a hot fix of sorts for the game as the actual patch notes are extremely vague and brief, at least compared to the other recent updates for the game. The majority of the patch notes focus on the bug fixes for the game as well as changes for a few things.
Without further ado, let’s take a look at all of the MTG Arena patch 0.17.1 notes and see what’s new with this update, beginning with the integral bug fixes that will be a welcome change for players.
MTG Arena Patch 0.17.1 Notes: Bug Fixes

For starters, this should be the first update for the game where you don’t have to download the entire game client on PC all over again to be able to install the new update for the game. Instead, you should simply be able to log into the game and start downloading this latest MTG Arena patch 0.17.1 update.
There have been a few important bug fixes that have arrived with this update. The first of these has to do with your account’s customized avatar. From now on, with this update, the avatar that you have chosen should now be displayed correctly to your opponent when doing Direct Challenge.
In addition to your chosen avatar displaying correctly as it should be, if you use the Mu Yanling card sleeve for your deck, it should be displayed properly in the game now. That was an unfortunate bug since the card sleeve for the popular blue Planeswalker is being sold in the shop currently and there were players who purchased it just to have it not work in matches.
The third major bug that this update fixes has to do with the elemental cat pet that you can get in the game. The cat has been the subject of many posts and issues for players since its launch early in July. Thankfully, the issues with it causing players to lose matches due to its colorful animations were fixed in the previous update.
But what wasn’t fixed and now is, is an issue with the pet re-enabling itself after a player has disabled it in a match. Part of the last update allowed players to disable the opponent’s pet if they so choose so they don’t have to watch the various colorful animations and, potentially, experience lag because of this.
But there was a bug that allowed the pet to be active again for you even if you did disable it previously. This could cause more performance issues for you if this happens, though, but the issues with that are supposed to be fixed with the previous update so it is possible that you should be fine regardless.
Finally, there is one last bug (well, bugs) that the patch notes go over and it has to do with the rampant performance issues that have been happening lately. The release of the most recent patch was meant to fix many of the issues players were having and, while it did accomplish that, it also created a whole set of other issues.
These issues were widely ranged and encompassed everything from game-breaking bugs to simple issues that could be fixed by restarting the game. These issues were more serious than the previous ones since players were unable to play land cards, attack the enemy, and many more.
Players would even be able to play cards and have them be stuck and unable to continue. There were even issues that were so bad that it made the players just have to give up the game. But when they would try to give up the game, they would find that they weren’t even able to select the quit button.
Wizards of the Coast noted in the patch notes that it has fixed a bug in the game that should address a large number of gameplay issues that players have been reporting recently. However, it only notes examples of cards being stuck hovering and the next/resolve button disappearing.
As such, it is entirely possible that your specific performance or gameplay issue wasn’t fixed by this particular solution. In fact, the developer even added a little note at the bottom of the bug fixes section addressing this. The developer was surprisingly and refreshingly honest in their notes.
It noted that the issues that players have been dealing with were difficult for the company to reproduce in this case. As such, it’s likely that your particular issue wasn’t fixed with this update. If that’s the case, you will need to head to the official bug forums.
There, Wizards of the Coast requests that you submit your game log files as well as your DXDiag. You can find out more about how to do that by heading to the forum post for this latest game patch here.
MTG Arena Patch 0.17.1 Notes: Event and Other Changes

Right now, the Plane-cation Chronicles limited time event is happening for the month of August. For several weeks, there are going to be events each week for players to enjoy. From new match formats that we’ve never seen before to familiar fan favorite, there is a lot to unpack during this month.
In addition, players who participate in this totally free event have the chance to earn some special land cards for free by amassing wins each week. The Standard Shakeup event saw Wizards of the Coast create a ban list for the event, including cards that players couldn’t use online in matches for it.
But the problem with this is that the meta game in general has changed since that ban list was introduced. As such, this update changes the ban list by removing some of the cards that were banned previously and introducing a few that will be surprising and unfortunate for some players.
Starting with the cards that have been removed, there are three cards that have been removed from the ban list. Those cards are Venerated Loxodon, Command the Dreadhorde, and Experimental Frenzy. This is great for those players who like using those cards as they are now officially allowed again in the event.
But it’s not all good news for some players. There are some new additions to the ban list, actually one more than what was removed from the list with this update. Those four cards are as follows: Brineborn Cutthroat, Sorin Imperious Bloodlord, Field of the Dead, and Feather the Redeemed.
If you were using those cards previously, you will no longer be able to use them starting with this update in the event.
The final change that has come up with this update is in regards to the drafting feature. Wizards of the Coast noted that its draft bots have been a “little under the weather” so it has made a few changes to how they are. Hopefully, this should make drafting even better for players.
