Mortal Kombat 11’s Gameplay and Gore Pleases Fans At Reveal Event

Thursday, Mortal Kombat (MK) fans got to see much more of Mortal Kombat 11’s gameplay during a reveal by franchise developer NetherRealm. Observers of this live spectacle witnessed several MK characters dish out serious punishment to one another, some extremely graphic fatalities, two new characters, and other surprises.

Let’s check out everything that was revealed.

This MK event began by showing off the iconic, hellfire ninja “Scorpion” dueling with the returning fan favorite Tarkatan warrior known as “Baraka.“ A co-creator of the MK universe, Ed Boon, provided commentary during this snippet of Mortal Kombat 11’s gameplay. Boon discussed several new game mechanics — such as the introduction of the “Fatal Blow,” which is a powerful ability that can be used when a character’s health bar falls below the thirty percent mark.

Afterward, it did not take long for this virtual fight to escalate and show off MK’s main attraction — Fatalities!

Baraka’s gruesome fatality involved literally ripping Scorpion’s face off, and taking a bite out of his brain (yummy). If you’re a fan of Mortal Kombat 11’s gameplay, be sure to check out the official Fatalities trailer below.

Other returning classic characters include Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kung Lao, Liu Kang, Shao Khan (pre-order bonus), and Sonya Blade —voiced by UFC and WWE star Ronda Rousey. Modern characters, such as Skarlet (debuted in MK 9) and Cassie Cage (daughter of Johnny Cage and Sonya) from MK X, are on the roster as well.

However, the most notable announcement was the addition of the new characters known as Geras and Kronika. Geras (seen in the trailer below) is Kronika’s servant — he has a rewind ability that allows him to return to his previous position, so his opponents will have a hard time predicting his movements.

Kronika is a significant character and will be the first-ever female main boss of a Mortal Kombat game. Boon said she has been “running the show since the first Mortal Kombat” at the reveal event, and though many details about her are still a mystery, it is known that this powerful villain can alter time.

NetherRealm will also be giving fans plenty of customization options for their favorite fighters. Players will be able to change every character’s outfit, victory screen poses, cinematic intros, fatalities, and their special abilities! Additionally, you can name and save different variations of your customized fighter.

Xbox One and PS4 gamers looking to experience Mortal Kombat 11’s gameplay early will have that opportunity — a beta will be available on March 28th to those who pre-ordered MK 11.

NetherRealm plans to share more details about the newest MK on January 30th during their Kombat Kast stream via Twitch and YouTube.

Mortal Kombat 11 launches April 23rd for Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
