Mortal Kombat 11 sales were great for the month of April, surely a success for developer NetherRealm Studios and publisher Warner Bros. The sales were so good, in fact, that it achieved something that hasn’t been done in the last decade in the games industry.
Mortal Kombat 11 was the number one best-selling game for the entire month of April 2019, despite releasing on April 23 right at the very end of the month almost. Not only was it the best-selling game for the entire month (according to the financial analyst NPD Group), but it was the highest selling game across all platforms.
That’s right, the fighting game sold the most number of copies of any game for the month on PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. PC wasn’t mentioned but it could be a similar case there as well. While this may not seem like much, this is an achievement hasn’t been done in a very long time in the industry.
The last game to sell the most copies for a month across all platforms was Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock almost 12 years ago. No other game has been able to beat out every single game on all platforms like this since then.
What makes it even more interesting is that Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock then went on to be the number one best-selling game for the entire year of 2007. While that may not be the same case for Mortal Kombat 11, it is telling for how well the game should do this year.
Currently, it has yet to beat out Kingdom Hearts 3 as the best-selling game for the year. However, since it’s only been around a month since the fighting game came out, there is still the possibility that this could happen by the end of the year.
It’s also worth noting that these financial results are based on both physical and digital sales on all platforms, so it does take into account each copy sold. The total revenue for the month of April in the video game industry was a whopping $427 million, a nice number considering there weren’t too many new and hot titles.
In addition to all of these accolades, that’s still not all regarding the Mortal Kombat 11 sales. The game is the first mature-rated game to be the highest-selling game on Nintendo’s platform since Bayonetta 2 originally released in 2014 for Wii U, which wasn’t necessarily hard to accomplish on that system.
It is worth noting, though, that Nintendo specifically published that game on the system while Mortal Kombat 11 is a third-party game that isn’t exclusive to the system. The last third-party game to do something like that was even longer ago and that was with Resident Evil 4 on the GameCube in 2005.
All in all, these are extremely impressive achievements for Mortal Kombat 11 sales. Fans of the game can expect sales to likely continue going strong for a good while longer. It remains to be seen how well it will do, though, for the rest of this year.
