Skill Based System in Modern Warfare Affects Aim?
A lot of issues can impact your ability to hit a target in a shooter. Lag, a slow reaction time, and lacking a steady hand have all been problems we’ve faced in these games, costing us kills we think we should have had or causing rage-filled cries of “LAG.”
These issues continue to plague shooters today, though, in the case of the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, there could be an entirely separate and intentional reason why you’re missing your shots.
Designed to Miss
According to a recent video by Blame Truth Archives, YouTube streamer Drift0r revealed in his discord a system in place in Modern Warfare designed to help players with poor connections and lower skills not get destroyed in the game.
The part of this skill based Modern Warfare system works by adjusting the accuracy of bullet spray from these struggling players to be more so, while stronger players and those with better connections having more of their bullets miss than their struggling/laggy counterparts.
Put in Drift0rs own words,
“Its quite simple, a good player can afford to have a random but small number of bullets in a magazine not register as they are more likely to hit their shots due to superior accuracy, consequently, that gives the bad player with poorer connection the ability to have a fairer experience as they can engage in a gunfight.”
The claims were only further backed up by a patent for Activision found in the US Patent & Trademark Office’s database which, in a brief synopsis, states that Activision was planning a system to balance out the difference in skill levels using a system just as described above.
Community Outrage
Community reaction to the revelations, made more visible by a post on Reddit, was immediate outrage and frustration, with many even feeling embarrassed by the system for basically handing them kills for being bad.
They called out how this system broke the core gunplay skill-check established in the series, and noted that while weaker players should still be able to enjoy the game, it shouldn’t come at the cost of the enjoyment of higher skilled players.
Others began to question the legitimacy of kills they’d achieved or been the victim of in Modern Warfare, while still others bemoaned how the combination of this and the 12 Hz servers were making it nearly impossible for good players to reliably land kills in the game.
Activision has not yet spoken out on whether or not the patented skill based system was indeed implemented into Modern Warfare, but if it’s proven true, it’s sure to be one of the most damning scandals in the franchise’s history and calls into question the competitive integrity of the game ahead of next years CoD League launch.
As always, we’ll keep you all updated as the situation develops.
