Modern Warfare Almost Had a Zombies Mode

by in Call of Duty | Jul, 8th 2020

Call of Duty Modern Warfare has a lot going for it in terms of content for players to check out. You have the singleplayer story that was sorely missing from Black Ops 4, the traditional multiplayer, Ground War, and Spec Ops. But did you know that there was almost a Modern Warfare Zombies mode, too?

Infinity Ward Artist Reveals Zombies Concept Art

There was and was just revealed recently by the Infinity Ward principal artist Aaron Beck who recently posted on Instagram some concept art about the canceled Modern Warfare Zombies mode. The image gives us our first look at what could have been for this game mode.

The concept art reveals a soldier who is clarified in the post to be a Russian special forces soldier who has a couple of quadruped robots with them that are his partners. The group looks to be in a snowy, dreary urban area where the robots hold a couple of zombies by the leash.

It gives off some modern military Michonne from The Walking Dead vibes and is unique compared to everything else that we have seen from the game and Zombies modes in the past. The concept art was formally revealed on social media after Beck received clearance to do so.

Why now of all times is unknown to us, though it could have to do with the upcoming announcement of the next Call of Duty game, which should happen in the future. Regardless, this concept art is intriguing and stunning, painting a dark picture of what this Zombies mode could have been.

What We Know About the Modern Warfare Zombies Mode

What’s interesting about the post is that Beck noted that he has been given clearance to share more art from Modern Warfare. This Modern Warfare Zombies mode concept art may be only the beginning of what will be shown off soon.

We could perhaps see more of this canceled game mode as well as other designs and art that didn’t make it into the full game. Regardless, Beck also noted that this concept is from early in production. The Modern Warfare Zombies mode was likely canceled pretty early on.

It is unfortunate, if so, as this idea is cool and certainly deserved more attention. But it is possible that it was too ambitious, didn’t fit the overall game well, or didn’t have enough time and manpower to dedicate to developing a separate Zombies mode.

The final interesting part about this social media post is that Beck called the concept art “classic Call of Duty zombie gameplay.” What is intriguing about this is that the two robot partners and taking captive zombies in combat isn’t exactly classic in the slightest and shows a unique take on the mode.

Black Ops 4 Is the Latest Game With Zombies

While we don’t have a Modern Warfare Zombies mode in the official game now, Ground War or Spec Ops could have taken its place. The latter is similar somewhat in nature to the wave-based cooperative modes of past Modern Warfare games, so this is possible.

But at the same time, this wouldn’t have been the first time that an Infinity Ward-developed game would have had a Zombies mode in it. The previous title, Infinite Warfare, did. It was a pretty great take on the infected wave-based gameplay.

Unfortunately, Infinity Ward didn’t opt to give Zombies a second chance as a developer with this game, as it could have been a great addition to an already stacked lineup of content. As of right now, except Infected, your options for Zombies are limited.

If you want to check out a Zombies mode on console or PC, your most recent option is to check out Black Ops 4, which was released back in 2018. Unfortunately, the most recent version of this mode is nearly two years old. We don’t have a similar counterpart available now.

Call of Duty 2020 Could Have a Zombies Mode

Even the mobile game Call of Duty Mobile does not have a Zombies mode right now. It did earlier this year for a little bit, but that was taken away and hadn’t come back since. And it doesn’t look like the infected will be joining the spin-off game Warzone anytime soon, as that is focused on the battle royale experience.

Your best bet for some fresh and new Zombies gameplay is to wait for the Call of Duty 2020 game. Treyarch is reportedly developing it, the original creators of the Zombies mode, so it is likely that that game will have some form of it available for players at launch.

That is, of course, barring any issues with the game that could prevent it from releasing this year or having a Zombies mode available when it releases initially. We have heard nothing but rumors and leaks about the next Call of Duty game having a troubling development.

We would normally already know about the next Call of Duty game, including its name, studio, and so on if it were just about any other year. Though 2020 is a rather strange year, it does seem like the pandemic situation isn’t necessarily the only reason we haven’t heard about this game.

For now, we will have to wait and see. The word these days is that we will find out about it in August, which is rather close to its proposed launch by the end of the year.
