Modern Warfare 2 Remastered Multiplayer Mod Revealed
Activision released the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Remastered Campaign game earlier this year, but there was one thing that was sorely missing from it: a multiplayer section. Fortunately, a Modern Warfare 2 Remastered multiplayer portion is coming soon.
MW2 Remastered Multiplayer Mod Announced
However, the Modern Warfare 2 Remastered multiplayer section isn’t an official one that Activision is releasing for players to check out on Xbox One, PS4, and PC, but rather a modded online multiplayer game that a team of Call of Duty fans is making themselves.
The MW2 Remastered multiplayer mod was announced through Eurogamer, who interviewed the modern team in question who is making this surprising but amazing project happen. There are 11 modders in total that are working on the game at this time.
They are led by the project’s lead modder, Gunoftruth, an automation engineer for their day job and a veteran modder for the Call of Duty games as a hobby. They have been at it for around seven years in total, so this latest project is something that isn’t new.
The prompting of the remastered multiplayer section for Modern Warfare 2 came about when Activision finally revealed the remastered campaign of the game earlier this year. That announcement was sudden, with the game itself releasing shortly after that in a strange way of handling it.
Why This Mod Is Being Made
That announcement followed after several leaks that all but confirmed the game was coming. But what many didn’t expect was for the remastered game to be just the singleplayer story campaign, and that was it. This is understandably the case since multiplayer is arguably more important when it comes to a Call of Duty game.
And doubly so for Modern Warfare 2, regarded by many as the cream of the crop when it comes to the Call of Duty multiplayer suite. There is the fact that the original Modern Warfare remastered a few years back. It had both the original game and its multiplayer included together.
The modders behind the upcoming MW2 Remastered multiplayer mod want to fill that gap by offering the remastered multiplayer experience for players on PC with all of the expected bells and whistles like better sound, textures, and overall graphics compared to its now rather old 2009 original title.
Because of the short time that has passed the official confirmation of the Modern Warfare 2 Remastered Campaign game, the mod itself is still in the earlier parts of the development. Still, the team is hoping to have the multiplayer game ready for PC players to check out in December this year.
Remastered Multiplayer Mod Is Fixing Some of the Original’s Issues
That said, some things like multiplayer maps are completed by this point, plus most of the weapons in the game already brought over. However, there are still decisions to make regarding what to keep and what to change from the original.
For instance, will the game use the remastered campaign’s new animations from the original, the same question for the sound effects, and so on? These are questions that the team asks the community for help in, to provide the best possible experience.
Then there are also the issues that original Modern Warfare 2 had with its multiplayer. Using the mod tools from the PC version of Black Ops 3, the team is addressing problems like the popular One Man Army exploit that players would use back in the original to keep getting explosives.
As part of fixing that major issue with the game, the team is dedicated to providing the Robert Bowling patch that was never released for the game as it was likely never able to be finished. Back then, Bowling, the community lead for Infinity Ward, attempted to get a patch through for problems like One Man Army glitch and more.
Activision Might Leave the Project Alone
But the patch ultimately fell through, likely due to the major shifts that happened right around the same time at the development studio when the heads Vince Zampella and Jason West left to eventually found their studio and make hit games like Apex Legends.
The modders are hard at work, attempting to provide some of the major changes that would have happened to Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer content. This patch was made like addressing combat boosting, attachment problems, silencers appearing, and so on.
Though the mod is in the works right now for a hopeful release date later this year, there is always the chance that Activision could shut this project down as it is regarding an IP that it owns. But there is a chance that this won’t happen at the same time.
After all, project lead Gunoftruth noted that many developers and employees at Activision are already aware of the MW2 Remastered multiplayer mod and haven’t done anything at this time. It could be that the studio has turned a blind eye, but we will have to wait and see for now.
Why an Official Remastered Multiplayer Was Likely Never Released
There is hope that Activision will ignore the project and let it be, as there is little chance of seeing a full multiplayer remaster for the game in the future. The reason why Activision avoided it could have been because of a couple of different reasons.
There is the possibility that Activision believes that there is too many multiplayer Call of Duty games in this day and age, so it didn’t make sense to add more. Perhaps the development and upkeep wouldn’t have been worth it.
Or, more likely, in our opinion, it is because the Modern Warfare 2019 reboot includes some maps from that game already. More are likely on the way for either it or its inevitable sequel later down the road. So, it could be seen as redundant by the studio to remaster the multiplayer right now.
