Wizards of the Coast has revealed a ton of new details about the upcoming Magic: The Gathering Modern Horizons set. There will be a lot of new and returning cards that will be featured as part of the set that will be launching early in June.

Some of the details given are on the Modern Horizons Changeling cards and themes that will be revived for this set including goblins, ninjas, slivers, and many more. One of the core themes for this upcoming set is the Changeling feature.

For those of you who don’t know, Changeling is a keyword on certain cards that allows the card to basically be every single creature type all at once. This is a great thing since it allows that card to mesh with just about type of creature deck that affects certain types of creatures.

Not only is the Modern Horizons Changeling a keyword that will be featured in the upcoming set, but there are a ton of different other details that Wizards of the Coast gave in a recent blog post. Having cards in this set that will be Changeling cards allows for the return of a ton of tribal themes that have been requested for a long time.

In addition to this, having a lot of Modern Horizons Changeling cards allow for many of them to be just simple cards that have no text or just one line of text or so. Last but not least, having Modern Horizons Changeling cards allow for older cards to be revamped with the Changeling feature this time around.

Modern Horizons Tribal Theme Details

There are several tribal themes that are returning in this upcoming set that fans have been wanting for quite some time. Because of the nature of this set, Wizards of the Coast has been able to listen to fans’ requests.

The first of these is the Slivers tribal theme. For those who don’t know, Slivers are a group of creatures that have a hive mind and share abilities with one another. They were first featured in the Tempest set and haven’t really been seen since Magic 2015.

Well, that’s all changing (pun intended) with this upcoming set. Slivers will be returning here and it’s worth noting that Changeling cards are featured in all five colors, but they are heavily focused around the red and white colors so it’s worth keeping that in mind.

Another big request from fans that will be seeing a return with the release of the Modern Horizons Changeling cards is the Ninja tribal theme. Oddly enough, the Ninja cards started out with nine cards of this theme but have only had a few new ones added since then.

As of right now, there are only a total of 14 Ninja cards in the entire collection of cards that span decades, which is really unfortunate. To make things worse, only 11 of them were printed with a black border.

Ninja cards that will be released in the new set will only be of the blue and black colors. This is to keep things more uniform with the previously released cards that were only blue and black. There are going to be enough Ninja cards added with this set that players will be able to build Ninja decks.

Goblin is another tribal theme that will be heavily featured in the new set for a couple of reasons. For one, it meshes well with the Modern format and it allows Wizards of the Coast to make a riff on older cards that will be revamped in this set.

In order to make Goblins work within the set, they had to release it with a second color in addition to the expected red color. For this particular set, the Goblins will focus on red and black, with black as the secondary color for these cards.

Last but not least, there are a ton of tribal themes that won’t get entirely new sets of cards in the set but they will at least get a one-off Changeling card that should please some fans. There were no examples given in the announcement, but fans can expect a ton of one-off cards.

Snow cards are also getting some love in the new set, with various snow lands that will be full-frame. These include the snow lands themselves as well as snow-themed cards that will require snow mana as the cost for the card.

There are other features that will be in the Modern Horizons set including more cards that reward players for having land cards in their graveyard. The set is meant to be a nostalgia trip for veteran players who have been around for some time.

While the set is meant for the Modern format, there will be cards added that will appeal to the Commander match format, too. Players won’t have to wait much longer for the new set to release. It comes out in digital form through Magic Online on June 6 before releasing in physical June 8 and 9 with a full release on June 13.
