Misfits Gaming will be making numerous changes to their coaching staff to correct course and potentially leave a mark in the second half of 2021. And, well, given the severity of their recent failures, they had to make huge, sweeping changes to stand even the slightest chance of climbing the ranks.

It’s no secret that Misfits — as an organization — have been pretty darn mediocre ever since they had reached the World Championship back in 2017. It’s like they flew too close to the sun and were punished for it with years of absolute mediocrity. Sometimes their failures were relatively acceptable, if not even justified. Other times, though, we couldn’t come up with a good enough excuse for their staggering ineptitude and downright dreadful play.

They made bad roster changes, mistreated their players, and have done next to nothing that would impress or create even the slightest amount of hype and momentum. They’re not as dreadful as, say, Excel Esports, but they’re not far off either. The thing with Misfits is that they always look like they’re on the verge of a potential comeback. It feels like they’re just about to mount an offensive, and yet they never do. A couple of flashes of brilliance are by no means enough to warrant our trust and benefit of the doubt, especially given their unimpressive history.

Split after split, year after year, it’s like they manage to unearth an entirely new way of imploding and, frankly, no one’s all too happy about it. Misfits are by no means an age-old LEC organization, but they’ve been around for quite a while now. And sure: they made mistakes (too many to count, in fact), but they still have a sizable following and have accomplished some truly amazing things in the competitive LoL realm. Having another top-tier team would benefit everyone involved, so we’re rooting for them to get on the same page and challenge the LEC status quo.

Their previous coach, Ilias “Enatron” Theodorou, will be stepping down, which means that Alexander “Candyfloss” Cartwright will be taking the reins from now on. Moreover, Misfits are reportedly in the process of signing Aleksi “H1IVA” Kaikkonen as well. This former player turned coach is expected to lead Misfits Premier in the upcoming LFL split. They failed to leave much of a mark at the most recent EU Masters Spring but have otherwise had a couple of hugely successful splits over in what can rightfully be deemed the most competitive of all the ERLs.

The 2021 LEC Summer Split is right around the corner (June 11), so one has to wonder: will these changes be enough to push Misfits Gaming into playoff contention? Their recent seventh-place finish left a lot to be desired, although, to be fair, they did have a couple of stellar moments — most of which came from their mid laner Vincent “Vetheo” Berrié.

In any case, we hope that a revamped coaching staff will be enough to push Misfits back into the spotlight. We’re not overly optimistic given their track record, but we’re hopeful nonetheless.
