Microsoft And Sony In A Strategic Partnership For The Future of Gaming

by in General | May, 16th 2019

So I just checked the date and we’re way past April Fools’ Day. This news is actually legit! Microsoft and Sony, two gaming industry giants, have agreed to bury the hatchet and enter a strategic partnership to ensure a better future of gaming for everyone. Mostly them, but for us too… This Microsoft Sony gaming partnership announcement came to the surprise of many. Here’s what it’s all about!

Microsoft Sony Gaming Partnership – Strength in Numbers

Even though these two companies are direct competitors with their PlayStation and Xbox gaming consoles, they decided to tackle the future of gaming together. Despite their differences, the Microsoft Sony gaming partnership aims to build and improve gaming platforms based on cloud computing. Needless to say, this move reflects on their visions for the future. The future in which Google and Amazon will want a progressively bigger share of the gaming cake. Especially with Google Stadia seeing the light of day and boasting pretty good feedback.

But what does all of this mean?

At the moment, this Microsoft Sony gaming partnership is still covered in abstract lines. However, we do know that Sony’s content streaming services will use Microsoft Azure infrastructure in the foreseeable future. In other words, it’s possible that we’ll get to enjoy PlayStation Now games through Microsoft’s infrastructure. Sounds crazy, right?

However, this isn’t a bad move by Sony. After all, their content streaming services are far inferior to those of Amazon and Microsoft. Partnering up with one of them was a clear course of action, and Kenichiro Yoshida seems to have made the right decision.

Here’s what he had to say about this whole Microsoft Sony gaming partnership ordeal:

“PlayStation® itself came about through the integration of creativity and technology. Our mission is to seamlessly evolve this platform as one that continues to deliver the best and most immersive entertainment experiences, together with a cloud environment that ensures the best possible experience, anytime, anywhere. For many years, Microsoft has been a key business partner for us, though of course, the two companies have also been competing in some areas. I believe that our joint development of future cloud solutions will contribute greatly to the advancement of interactive content.”

In addition to cloud technologies, this partnership will also explore different solutions in the field of artificial intelligence. Considering this crazy turn of events, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Xbox games available on PlayStation a few years from now. I still doubt Sony would play ball, but at this point, who knows…
