The All-New Metro Exodus Announced For Epic Games Store Release Instead Of Steam

by in Fortnite | Jan, 29th 2019

Metro Exodus is set to be released just a day after Valentine’s Day 2019, February 15 to be precise. However, the PC version will feature a big alteration. The game has been available for preorder on Steam, but the newest announcement from Deep Silver states Metro Exodus will be available exclusively on the Epic Games Store.

That said, the Epic Games Store stealing Metro Exodus could be another push for the eventual fall of Steam. But why is this happening? After all, Metro Exodus is not the first game to abandon Steam and making the switch to the Epic Games Store, so there must be a good reason behind it.

Epic Games Store Stealing Metro Exodus | It’s All About The Money

The Epic Games Store stealing Metro Exodus from Steam actually falls down to the basic principle of capitalism. Steam takes a 30% cut of a games’ revenue, and the other 70% go to the game developers. The Epic Games Store takes a much smaller 12% cut – a huge difference, to say the least.

Yeah, 18% difference might not seem like a big deal to some of you, but when there are millions of dollars on the line, that 18% difference stacks up big time. To put it in simple terms – you can expect more games to come charging down the Epic Games Store’s gates.

Plus, this is not the first big title that has chosen Epic Games Store instead of Steam. Ubisoft also made a recent announcement that their upcoming title, The Division 2, will only be available on the Epic Games Store and Uplay. Needless to say, if Steam doesn’t change their game royalty policies, these switches will be even more frequent. What started out with The Division 2 and Metro Exodus could transition to more and more upcoming AAA titles.

Heck, indie games could follow the bandwagon too. While Steam has long been a safe haven for indie projects, things could change with the rise of the Epic Games Store. Obviously, every penny counts for indie developers, so EGS makes sense with its much lower profit cuts. One way or another, it seems as though Steam will be forced to change their policies to stay competitive. When will this happen? That we can only guess.

As you can tell, the Epic Games Store stealing Metro Exodus could cause echoes throughout the industry. Could this be the fall of Steam? While it’s still kind of unlikely, the Epic Games Store is definitely on the right path, at least for the moment!

*UPDATE*

Deep Silver updated their press announcement, stating Metro Exodus will return to Steam and other digital PC stores after January 14, 2020. In other words, it seems the Epic Games Store has only one year of exclusive rights to Metro Exodus.
