MediaTek to Challenge Qualcomm and Apple With Its Upcoming Dimensity 9000 SoC
MediaTek has just announced its brand-new flagship SoC: the Dimensity 9000! It’s soon going to power some of the most powerful Android flagships on the market, so if you’re into mobile gaming — or just like to keep up with the latest trends — definitely make sure to read on!
The reason why this particular chipset is so darn interesting and worthy of attention is because it is expected to beat out Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888, its successor the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, and even Apple’s A15 Bionic! It might not outclass them in every single metric and benchmark, but it will nonetheless outperform them in the vast majority of workloads and that, in short, is simply astounding!
Well, at least according to MediaTek’s own claims. We’ve yet to see this chipset in action, but all signs are pointing towards it being an absolute behemoth!

Most folks probably aren’t aware of MediaTek’s existence as this company was thus far mostly focused on low- and mid-tier Android phones, smart TVs, and the like, but all of that is going to change if the Dimensity 9000 ends up being as powerful as expected.
A Trailblazer Through and Through
This particular SoC is hugely important for a wide variety of reasons. First of all, it is the world’s first mobile chipset manufactured on TSMC’s 4nm node which means it is more efficient and technologically advanced than anything else on the market. Secondly, it is based on the latest ARMv9 architecture — that alone will reportedly yield astounding gains in performance.
It’ll retain the tri-cluster CPU configuration we’re used to seeing, but one of its cores will be of the novel Cortex-X2 kind, and it’ll run at a whopping 3.05Ghz. Rounding out the cluster are three Cortex-A710 cores running at 2.85Ghz, and four Cortex-A510 cores running at 1.80Ghz.
LPDDR5X RAM will also be supported which means that forthcoming Android devices (top-tier ones, at least) will have faster and more energy-efficient memory on-board as well.
Last but certainly not least, there’s the ARM-Mali G710 GPU with a total of 10 cores and ray tracing support. Whether we really need ray tracing on our mobile phones is heavily up for debate. Regardless, we’re always happy to see big tech companies push the envelope, even if it’s in the most superfluous way imaginable. Speaking of superfluous and totally over-the-top, the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 will also be able to handle a single 320MP camera. We’re still a few years away (at least) from seeing such a beastly sensor on any kind of mobile phone, but at least MediaTek has set the foundation and will provide the right support when the time comes.

A Tectonic Shift
Qualcomm, not one to be outdone, is expected to unveil its own Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC on November 30. Whether it’ll be as good as MediaTek’s upcoming offering still remains to be seen, but it’s quite evident that all the “big hitters” in the industry are racing to create the absolute best and most powerful chipset imaginable. Some of them have been more successful than others, but it’s fair to say that the gap has started to narrow. Better yet, through some unimaginable feat of engineering (or witchcraft), they’ve actually managed to strike a fine balance between astounding performance and respectable battery life (especially in Apple’s case).
Its A15 Bionic will still be able to trade blows and is the benchmark by which we gauge and measure all other SoCs; with that being said, this will be the first time in what feels like forever that the Cuppertino-based giant will have a challenger worthy of mentioning. Unfortunately, MediaTek’s top-of-the-line chipset will not be available in the United States as it doesn’t have mmWave support. Still, this is just the beginning for MediaTek and there’s a very good chance that its upcoming mid- and lower-tier offerings will, in fact, show up in all regions across the globe.
In any case, the battle for “silicon supremacy” has only just begun and we, the consumers, are likely to benefit the most!
