Hope to see a lot of friends there
Going to be one of the most hype esports events of the year!
There have been very few details about EsportsMystery. Christopher “MonteCristo” Mykles, an Overwatch League analyst, tweeted about on Monday that the event will be held in Denver. Mateus Portilho, a social media manager for Cloud9 and London Spitfire, sent out a tweet with an image of a ticket, confirming the location and revealing that the event will be held at 1 PM Mountain Time. The location is a “Secret Chamber.” The image also features a tagline that says “Esports Mystery: A Magical Journey is Coming.”
Thanks to the excellent detective work by Reddit user, /u/Fordeka, we now have a post listing 25 people associated with Overwatch going to the event and 14 media members. The confirmed attendees include Overwatch League team general managers, Overwatch League makeup artists, esports casters, and even esports lawyers. The attendee’s list doesn’t give any indication on what the event might be. All we know is it’s newsworthy, and it revolves around Overwatch.
So, what could the EsportsMystery event be? It’s clearly about the Overwatch League, or at least the Overwatch competitive scene.
My first instinct after seeing the list of people attending is that there will be a multimedia announcement regarding the broadcasting rights. In July, ESPN secured the rights to the Overwatch League and aired select matches and highlights on ABC, ESPN, and Disney XD (all three are under the umbrella of The Walt Disney Company). I assume that after EsportsMystery, the Overwatch League will be regularly televised live on ESPN and Disney XD. I wouldn’t be surprised if the matches were broadcast on ESPN+, as ESPN has been pushing more content on their subscription-based online media service.
If the EsportsMystery event doesn’t have anything to do with broadcasting, then I’m not sure what it could be. I can’t imagine it involves anything to do with the game, as a brand new hero was released at BlizzCon earlier this month. I also don’t expect it to be about the new teams the Overwatch League brought in for the 2019 season.
Who knows, maybe it’s an ESPN-backed tournament announcement? We’ll be keeping an eye out for more information on this topic and will update you when the EsportsMystery event is officially revealed.
