Marvel Wants Hawkeye and Other Heroes in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Marvel Games vice president and creative director Bill Rosemann has gone on the record to officially talk about the potential of having Marvel Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC fighters. Rosemann specifically noted that he could imagine seeing heroes like Hawkeye fighting alongside Link and other Smash characters.
In a video interview with Game Informer, Bill Rosemann was asked about what he thinks about the possibility of seeing any Marvel characters show up in Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate game. When the question was posed to him, his answer was vague and left just about everything open to interpretation, but it was an interesting interview nonetheless.
Rosemann noted that you can “imagine anything” happening. For him, he can imagine seeing popular Marvel Avengers character Hawkeye “standing next to” The Legend of Zelda’s main character Link and both of them shooting arrows, as they are both known to do.
However, just him imagining that doesn’t really mean anything at all. Rosemann went out to say that “anything could happen” but that he isn’t the person to make a decision regarding the possibility of Marvel Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC fighters.
As such, you shouldn’t take this to mean that we should see an announcement at E3 or the like for Hawkeye or Thor or Iron Man or any other Marvel characters in Smash from Nintendo anytime soon. This reply from Bill Rosemann is strictly a personal one.
Rosemann is vice president of Marvel Games, which is a subsection of the Marvel company owned by Disney. Though he does have some level of power within the company for sure, it is likely that there are quite a few hoops that would need to be jumped through to have Marvel Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC fighters.
It honestly wouldn’t surprise us to see Disney and Marvel give the go ahead for superheroes to show up in the game, as that doesn’t seem like it would be the problem necessarily. The bigger problem might be Nintendo since it has been very specific in the past on who shows up in Smash.
Could We See Marvel Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC Fighters?
Part of the general rules that basically all Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fighters have followed to date is that they originally come from video games and are all characters that were created by a Japanese company.
Having any Marvel Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC fighters would break both of those trends at once since it is a Western company and the characters would have originated from something other than a video game. It wouldn’t be surprising to see this happen, but you should take it with a grain of salt regardless.
Marvel isn’t the only company to want a crossover like this to happen with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate either. The developers behind games like Halo, Cuphead, and many more would like to see their characters show up in the crossover fighting game, too.
However, it would be extra awesome to see Hawkeye, Captain America, Spider-Man, and others show up in Smash Ultimate since the two properties go together so perfectly. After all, Infinity War was billed as the most ambitious crossover in entertainment history and you could certainly argue that Smash is up there, too, if it hasn’t triumph over it entirely.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s 74 character roster is truly deserving of the new tagline: “Everyone is Here”.
No matter what, having Marvel and Nintendo crossover in this way would honestly make Super Smash Bros. Ultimate the “ultimate” crossover in the history of mankind for sure. Bill Rosemann also addressed Marvel’s general relationship with Nintendo in the interview as we near the launch of the Nintendo Switch exclusive Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order.
