League of Legends: Wild Rift Officially Announced

by in General | Oct, 16th 2019

The wait is over — League of Legends: Wild Rift is finally unveiled! For the uninitiated, this is a console/mobile version of League of Legends. While this concept might seem overly ambitious, we’ve already written about the many positives and negatives that such an undertaking entails.

Saying that it’s a “mobile version” doesn’t do it justice, as it’s as close to a full-fledged League experience on the go as possible. You’re playing without a keyboard and, by proxy, without a metric ton of bindings. The fact that they’ve been able to cram so many actions on one screen is staggering. What is even more impressive is the fact that it seems to be running so well (and in such intuitive fashion)

This time around, however, we have an official look at the game, and needless to say — we’re impressed.

Champion Pool

League of Legends: Wild Rift will launch with around 40 champions — the same ones we all know and love. Riot will then slowly add additional champions until the game’s full roster is present in the mobile version as well.

You can expect skins and other accompanying cosmetic items to make an appearance as well. Seeing how the mobile variant will remain free-to-play, Riot will implement the same revenue model.

Adapted Summoner’s Rift

The Summoner’s Rift has been rebuilt from the ground up, but it’s still the same map you’ve been playing on for years. Some things are slightly tweaked to speed up game time, but overall, you’ll feel right at home from the moment you spawn.

Ranked Ladder

Much like with Riot’s upcoming mobile Teamfight Tactics, League of Legends: Wild Rift will have the full-fledged ranked experience for those who want to test out their luck on the go. Now you’ll be able to go on horrendous losing streaks on the subway as well!

Minimum Requirements

It’s still too early to talk about realistic system (or phone, rather) requirements, but Riot did provide us with what they’re aiming for. Fortunately, you won’t need the latest and greatest phone to compete in League of Legends: Wild Rift!

Riot wants to make the game playable on an iPhone 5S (which is an old device by this point, although still perfectly usable). You’ll need at least a Snapdragon 410 CPU and an Adreno 306 GPU if you’re sporting an Android phone. In other words, they want to make the game as widely accessible as possible. If they do pull off these goals, they’re bound to attract millions of new players across the globe.

Consoles

Riot also announced that they’re looking to publish League of Legends: Wild Rift on consoles sometime after 2020. While that’s a broad release schedule, it makes perfect sense. Have the mobile release function as somewhat of a pilot project, and then make it accessible on mainstream consoles as well — in a perhaps slightly more complex incarnation, seeing how they’ll be able to map controls a lot easier on a standard console gamepad.

We’ve already seen SMITE succeed (by SMITE standards) on home consoles (PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch), so there’s no reason why an established IP like League of Legends shouldn’t make the jump as well.

Cross-Platform Play

Console/mobile cross-platform play is a possibility, although Riot noted that it’s still too early to make any promises. Playing on one platform might provide players with an inherent edge, so they’re treading carefully when it comes to mixing and matching.

We’ll have to wait for 2020 before we can get our hands-on League of Legends: Wild Rift and test things out ourselves. In the interim, go to the Google Play Store and pre-register to get notified when the game (or any impending beta test) becomes available in your region.

We’ve already seen just how well MOBA games can function on mobile phones, thanks to Arena of Valor. While it might seem watered-down, that’s far from the case — Arena of Valor has a staggering amount of depth and complexity.
