League of Legends Autofill Balancing Incoming

by in League of Legends | Mar, 18th 2020

Here’s a thing people stopped complaining about: League of Legends autofill balancing. To be fair, the community didn’t stop because it ceased a problem, but rather because most of us realized we complained about one of the many things Riot completely ignored for an unknown reason. It was always a matter of “soon” and yet balancing never came. It felt like we, the community, played an entirely different game and had insights that, for some reason, eluded the balancing team.

Autofill Balancing Finally Here

Fortunately, our pleas were heard loud and clear. Riot is planning to further balance and adjust League of Legends autofill parameters. This is fantastic news overall (primarily for those who play ranked). Even though it didn’t come quick (or easy), at least we’re going to see an improvement.

Going forward, the Solo/Duo queue matchmaking system will likely match teams with differing numbers of autofilled players. This means queue times will spike, but it’s fair to say that it’s a worthwhile trade-off. Everyone would gladly wait a bit longer than play with someone who’s autofilled. That’s torture for everyone involved, especially if matched against a team of players all playing their primary roles. Riot hopes this will not only balance things out, but also make games with autofilled players feel “as fair as possible.”

They will also ship the same change when it comes to premades. It’s hard to say what was worse — playing with multiple autofilled players or playing by yourself against multiple premade duos communicating on Discord or Skype. The overall experience was abysmal and it seriously affected ranked play for many people regardless of server or rank.

At the time of this writing, Riot plans to make these adjustments exclusive to ranked play, but if things pan out as expected, they’ll expand to other queues as well. Fingers crossed. It feels like this change is long overdue, but at least the game is moving in the right direction. Many players are unsatisfied with the whole 2020 ranked experience. Hopefully, this kind of balancing update will noticeably change things.
