Kojima is In Talks With Xbox After Signing Letter of Intent
Players often see Hideo Kojima’s early work with Metal Gear Solid attached to the PlayStation console up until Metal Gear Solid V, when the game was released on multiple consoles, putting an end to the series’ Playstation exclusivity. However, while that decision was not Kojima’s, it appears that working with Xbox is indeed on his mind, as he’s signed a “letter of intent” with the company before engaging in talks with them.
While talks between the legendary game designer and Microsoft haven’t officially begun yet, this letter of intent is more than just a signed piece of paper. It means that Kojima has set in stone that the two will meet to discuss something related to his next project, based on comments he’s made about it, as well as some of the industry players he’s taken a keen interest in recently.
It’s All About the Cloud
While the prospect of the two titans of the industry working together is old news, the possibility of the two going through with the project was something that many fans were wondering about. However, with the letter of intent signed, it means that the deal is continuing. Kojima isn’t working with Microsoft just to make his next game an Xbox exclusive though; it’s about the technology that Microsoft is offering for Kojima to use.
Kojima is particularly interested in the cloud technology that Xbox has developed, stating that he wants to use the cloud as a major part of his upcoming game. With Xbox’s xCloud streaming service being used for Game Pass on mobile devices, Kojima is looking to the company for their help. This all seems to fall in line with the fact that Microsoft hired a specific person for this job, famed Portal and Left 4 Dead developer Kim Swift. While those previous games in her resume aren’t necessarily related to cloud-based gaming, the truth of the matter actually lies within another aspect of her career, Google Stadia. Kim has extreme experience working with Stadia to make cloud-based gaming viable, and was picked up by Microsoft, supposedly, for the specific purpose of helping Kojima on his potential upcoming Xbox title.
Kojima is known for making games that break the conventions of the industry, from the cinematics and nuance of games like Metal Gear Solid, to the fact that Kojima’s latest title, Death Stranding, contains little combat and a focus on conquering the environment around the player to deliver packages to a given destination. Kojima has brought it upon himself to show the world that he’s more than willing to break the mold in order to bring about a new form of entertainment for players to enjoy, all while saying something about the world around us.
Kojima’s also been known to “predict” issues that are on the rise in the world. Some of that can be seen in his speech from an AI in Metal Gear Solid 2, and the whole concept of Death Stranding, something that Kojima has mentioned himself coming true “earlier than he expected.”
Details Are Still Shrouded
With all this in mind, there’s no specific pitch that Kojima has put out about his new project, meaning that players are left in the dark about what this new game could be about. However, with the fact that it has something to do with the cloud, it could be possible that Kojima is planning something special.
There is a possibility that Kojima is planning a multiplayer experience, using the concept of AI and the cloud to stream a single open world that players can interact with while building a new society, making the world larger and more vibrant while streaming all of the data about the world through a connection that is near-instantaneous for every player. Another possibility could be allowing players to use the cloud to its utmost advantage, making it central focus on the gameplay much like the focus on Death Stranding is to use the world to prepare for every situation while managing what supplies the player is allowed to carry and focusing on avoiding rather than confronting hostiles.
Although most of this is pure speculation, one thing is for certain, and it’s that Kojima has something special planned. Whether or not people are going to like it, he’s going to continue to make exactly what he wants to the best of his ability, with all the help he can get from everyone around him, regardless of online creed to specific companies.
