Keanu Reeves Doesn’t Want His Characters to Appear in Mortal Kombat

When it comes to action characters, some characters have stood out from the rest, and none are as popular in the modern-day as Keanu Reeves’ John Wick and Neo. With Neo coming back for the 4th Matrix movie and a John Wick 4 coming out next year, two of his most well-known characters are still within the public eye.

However, players have wondered if his characters will appear in video games anytime soon. Reeves has been in games before, with John Wick getting his own strategy game called John Wick Hex. His likeness and concepts from the John Wick films have also appeared in the co-op bank robbing game Payday 2. His actual likeness was also used in Fortnite, as Season 3’s maxed out battle pass skin resembled John Wick. However, an official John Wick skin came out. Aside from these inclusions in gaming media, many players wonder if John Wick, known for taking out the league of assassins in creative and brutal ways, would be included in something as brutal as Mortal Kombat.

Reeves was asked if he’d be willing to allow these characters in something like Mortal Kombat. He said no. However, he has a good reason for not allowing these characters to join the ranks of Sub Zero and Scorpion.

Why Reeves Doesn’t Want His Characters in Mortal Kombat

While the characters of John Wick and Neo might fit into the world of Mortal Kombat, Reeves thinks that they wouldn’t be a good fit. “Mortal Kombat is awesome, in so many ways.” Reeves says in the video published by Esquire, “But Neo… John Wick… They’re doing their own thing. Mortal Kombat is doing their own thing.”

This might not be the answer players are hoping for, but Reeves seems well-versed in the game, enough to call it awesome. However, his interpretation of his characters may shed some light on why they wouldn’t be included in the game.

A Possible Reasoning Behind His Answer

The characters of both John Wick and Neo are heroes. To the audience, they’re the protagonists of their own story, and they’re normally the kind of people who wouldn’t start a fight if they were given a chance to. In the first John Wick movie, the inciting incident that causes John Wick to go on his rampage is that someone had slighted him by taking his car and dog from him. John Wick wasn’t the person to initiate the conflict. The same concept could be applied to Neo. Morpheus calls Neo, and he’s then forced into the conflict against the agents with Morpheus and Trinity. Neo isn’t the one who wanted to start this conflict but is someone who’s reluctantly fighting for the sake of saving everyone imprisoned by the Matrix.

These characters, both being people who didn’t intentionally start their conflicts, wouldn’t fit into the world of Mortal Kombat’s world, compared to a character like RoboCop, who’s willing to go through anyone necessary to make sure he completes his mission.

His characters are more likely to avoid a fight if they show that they are “doing their own thing.” However, there’s still a chance that one of Reeves’ characters might be coming to a fighting game, considering that in 2019, Ed Boon had mentioned that NetherRealm was pretty close to adding Neo in Injustice 2. With Warner Brothers owning NetherRealm and their fighting game Multiversus coming out in the next year, the potential to add someone like Neo in the upcoming fighting games would be the only reason he would be included.
