Sonic the Hedgehog might be getting in on the Vtuber craze on Youtube or elsewhere! For those uninitiated, a Vtuber is a portmanteau of the words “Virtual” and “Youtuber”. People get avatars created, that is also typically animated. These virtual avatars represent the streamer, where they can be essentially whatever they want. It’s great for people not comfortable with their personal appearance, and for people who feel like they can be more creative through this outlet. It’s really taken Youtube by storm. So why not animated characters/video game characters like SEGA’s Sonic the Hedgehog? It’s a brilliant idea.

Whether this is a permanent fixture or not isn’t clear. It sounds like it’s going to be a part of Sonic’s 30th Anniversary, which has just begun. This style of creative streaming is still pretty new, but to see companies be quick to jump on board is a really smart idea. After all, there’s never been a way for fans of Sonic to actually interact with him. The closest we’ve seen to something like this is to have Chuck E. Cheese streaming Fall Guys.

Another similar moment was Charles Martinet speaking for a virtual interactive Mario at a trade show years ago. But if Mario has a virtual speaking, Sonic has to be bigger, he has to be a Vtuber. The battle between the two will never end!

The difference here is that Chuck E. Cheese was (spoiler) a person in a suit. However, a lead designer in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise could lead to Sonic becoming a Vtuber. This comes from Kazuyuki Hoshino himself, so that seems pretty legit to us. Apparently, a great deal of this was inspired by the success of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Surprisingly successful, that is. There was also a vague mention of a Sonic theme park, in the vein of Super Nintendo World (probably).

News of Sonic the Hedgehog becoming a Vtuber came from a Famitsu article, where Hoshino said Sonic is “being converted to a VTuber and is being prepared for a new project.”  There’s no telling where this will go quite yet, but if nothing else, it’s SEGA getting to market as a big-time character becoming a Vtuber first. So if you’ve ever wanted to have a chat with your favorite chilli dog-lovin’ Hedgehog, you might get a chance soon enough!
