Immortals Test Positive For COVID-19, Will Compete Online This Weekend

by in League of Legends | Jul, 23rd 2021

Immortals will go into quarantine because of a pair of positive COVID-19 tests, as per LCS commissioner Chris Greeley.  As a result, the team will play out its next three games remotely — an option that has been given to their upcoming opponents as well (Dignitas QNTMPAY, Evil Geniuses, and 100 Thieves). Additionally, a brief delay will be implemented so as to ensure competitive integrity, but the broadcast itself shouldn’t be affected in any way whatsoever.

What Did The LCS Have to Say?

“Earlier today, the LCS learned that Immortals will be undergoing quarantine due to a pair of positive COVID-19 tests. In conjunction with Immortals, we’re currently undergoing contact tracing to understand who, if anyone else, may be impacted,” said Greeley through an official statement.

This is quite unfortunate news for Immortals as a whole. We don’t know who’s been infected and whether this unexpected development will affect their ability to perform. It’s definitely not something anyone is ever prepared for, so they probably didn’t have any contingency plan prepared.

There’s a Silver Lining

Fortunately for Immortals, their respectable 17W-22L record means they’re all but guaranteed to end up in the playoffs. Whether they’ll finish in seventh or eighth place still remains to be seen, but the buffer between Immortals and those who are currently ranked below them is far too great for this unfortunate development to leave a lasting mark. It’s a stressful situation, no doubt, but things could’ve been a whole lot worse. Moreover, we’d be remiss if we didn’t say that they would’ve probably lost to Evil Geniuses and 100 Thieves — arguably two of the best and most dangerous teams in the LCS right now. Whether this sudden shift to remote play will affect their chances against Dignitas still remains to be seen.

The Esports Talk team wishes a speedy recovery to anyone at Immortals who may have caught COVID-19, and we hope that they’ll be able to return to the LCS stage as soon as possible.
