Immortals Needs to Let Go of OpTic CS:GO
Four months after Immortals purchased OpTic Gaming and announced their decision to sell the CSGO roster, the team finds itself in a weird limbo. They are unable to sign new players or make any changes to staff.
With the OpTic brand going over to solely Call of Duty following the switch to franchising in that scene, Immortals has spent months shedding all of OpTic’s old rosters. They dropped their all-star Gears of War lineup and sold the Houston Outlaws Overwatch League team to Lee Zieben.
But the CSGO roster has been trickier, with no known attempts to purchase the lineup and the team unable to keep the squad since they already own MIBR in the scene.
Since the rules for CSGO prevent Immortals from signing new players to the OpTic squad, the roster has slowly begun to dwindle. Cajun’s contract is expiring, and Jugi is getting picked up by North. The only people left are K0nfig, MSL, and Niko, with stand-ins to fill the holes in the roster being the only respite.
The players have publicly expressed their frustration and feeling of hopelessness in lite of the situation, coming to a head this morning as K0nfig announced on Twitter that the roster would be disbanding itself, stating,
“We have chosen to disband the OpTic lineup because there is no future in OpTic. I’m ready to be sold individually. I strongly feel like this is the best choice. My focus is to get my individual skill up while I wait.”
MSL also announced he’d be benching himself from the lineup. He noted that while the team had initially come together with the promise of building a strong roster, the Immortals sale had made the task all but impossible to accomplish.
While the org itself hasn’t disbanded the squad, without players, it’s all but guaranteed at this point. With none of the original members remaining on the squad, the team is set to lose it’s EPL spot. It is the last asset worth selling for the squad beyond the player’s contracts, plummeting the value of the team.
Immortals have yet to release a statement regarding the announcement by the OpTic players. But, given the situation, the org may find it better to sell the players individually and shutter the team, bringing the tale of CS OpTic to a rather disappointing conclusion.
