FunPlus Phoenix Enters CSGO
League of Legends World Championship winner FunPlus Phoenix is looking to expand its esports reach, as the team will enter into the CSGO ecosystem. The news of the Chinese org’s entry was revealed in a post on the official FLASHPOINT league’s Twitter account.
The Major Players
According to a report at 1PV, the team will enter the FLASHPOINT League along with fellow teams Chaos and HAVU to complete the first season’s list of teams participating.
FunPlus Phoenix picks up the five-man Danish roster of Heroic to mark their entry into CSGO. The roster includes Snappi, CadiaN, Es3tag, Stavn, and B0RUP for its starting lineup.
The move marks a first for the team after an incredibly successful year in League of Legends. They topped the regular-season standings in both Spring and Summer Splits, won their first domestic title in Summer and won Worlds 2019 in November.
The move to pick-up a Danish squad is the first time a Chinese CSGO org has ran an entirely non-Chinese roster outside of the country. They have the potential to open the floodgates as other large orgs in the region look to get in on the action.
Despite the prestige behind the org, they’ll have a long road ahead of them to prove they have what it takes to play with the top dogs in CSGO. The old Heroic squad has struggled mightily as of late. The team failed to make it out of last place at ICE Challenge 2020. They also failed to qualify for the European Minor for the Rio Major, falling to Team Heretics and the Copenhagen Flames in the Closed Qualifier.
With the backing of a much larger organization, though, it could be the assistance the team needs to break into the upper tier of competitive CSGO finally.
