Free Fire Champions Cup and World Series Announced for 2020 Esports Lineup

by in General | Jan, 28th 2020

More than 450 million people play Free Fire, a mobile battle royale title. It was successful in 2019, and they’re building on that with the Free Fire World Series and Champions Cup, both coming this year. Free Fire will be hosting four international tournaments in 2020.

How much cash is on the line? Up to INR 14 crore in prize money is potentially up for grabs; for those of you who don’t know, that’s an Indian currency. That looks to be about $1.9 million. That’s serious cash!

Free Fire India Is a Serious Market

Free Fire’s India market is a huge area for them, so they will have their qualifiers, leading up to each of these esports tournaments. Registrations for Free Fire India Championship 2020 were announced recently as well. The winners of that will get to head on to the Free Fire Champions Cup 2020.

Just last year, the champions of Free Fire India Today League 2019, Team Nawabzade represented the country at Free Fire World Series 2019. It sounds like it’s going to be a pretty intense year for Free Fire esports.

The First Tournament

The first international tournament of the year is the Free Fire Champions Cup 2020 in Jakarta, Indonesia on April 19. The Free Fire Champions Cup qualifiers have already begun, with the top 12 teams from 9 regions will rise from the local and regional qualifiers.

The first-ever global Free Fire tournament was held in 2019 in Bangkok Thailand. It’s going to be a pretty remarkable homecoming for Free Fire, I imagine. The previous Free Fire World Cup saw their first global champion crown: Team Evos Capital from Indonesia. Over 1 million peak concurrent viewers were present on YouTube.

While I was previously unfamiliar with Free Fire, I’ve read that this was the largest online simultaneous crowd for an esports event on YouTube, courtesy of Esports Charts.

Free Fire World Series Returns

After this record-breaking year, the Free Fire World Series will continue, taking place in November 2020 with the finals in Brazil for a second time. The reception for last year’s World Series was amazing, too. Free Fire World Series 2019 had more than 2 million peak concurrent viewers online.

That’s another record! That shattered the world record high for a mobile esports tournament with more than 130 million online views around the world. If you thought for a minute mobile esports weren’t serious, this is more than enough here.

At Free Fire World Series 2019, Team Corinthians from Brazil became the first team to win a global tournament on their home soil. Whether that gives a home-field advantage or not, that remains to be seen. Those waiting on the esports action won’t have to wait too long.

The Free Fire Champions Cup drops in April 2020. For the first time in 2020, there will be two additional first-of-its-kind Free Fire global tournaments in June as well as July. There will be more details forthcoming, and when we know, so will you!
