Fortnite Lawsuit Results in Free V-Bucks for Players
Who knew that a gross, hated, predatory system like lootboxes could spur negative consequences? When Fortnite launched, it was separated into two modes: the co-operative “Save the World” mode and the battle royale that has long-since dominated the game. Fortnite: Save the World had “Loot Llamas,” which were lootboxes that gave you random items for real money. There wasn’t a single person who seemed to like this system. Real money lootboxes don’t need to be in a PVE, co-operative game, but here we were. Now, Epic Games gives out 1,000 V-Bucks to any player who bought a Loot Llama in Fortnite.
A Gift of Free V-Bucks: What Could Be Better?
There are still Loot Llamas in Save the World, but now they’re “X-Ray Llamas,” and they show you the box’s content. Even though the original Loot Llamas were only around a couple of weeks, a class-action lawsuit was filed, which led to Fortnite giving free V-Bucks to players worldwide. Interestingly, the lawsuit was only in America, but anyone who bought one anywhere in the world will see the V-Bucks in their client. As to the why, they spoke about it on Twitter. “We believe players should know upfront what they are paying for. This is why today we only offer X-Ray Llamas that show you the contents before you purchase them in Save the World.”
Interestingly enough, this also goes for people who purchased an Event Crate or Key used to open a crate in Rocket League, according to an Epic Games blog post. This had to be done before their discontinuation, just like in Fortnite to get the free V-Bucks or Rocket League Credits.
The blog post explains why. “We used to offer random item Loot Llamas in Fortnite: Save the World, which was an in-game purchase option where you wouldn’t always know what you were getting. While some of you enjoyed purchasing random item Loot Llamas and being surprised by the content unlocked, others were disappointed. So we decided a better experience for players was to be upfront and outline the details of in-game purchases — through the Item Shop and with new “X-Ray” Llamas.”
According to a Fortnite leaker, some players who never purchased a Loot Llama also receive the 1,000 free V-Bucks. This is probably due to the tutorial for Fortnite: Save the World, for some reason or another. All we know for sure is that if you purchased either of these items when they were around, whether you bought 1 or 1000, you would get 1,000 free V-Bucks in a few days on Fortnite. It may take a few days, so don’t worry if you don’t see yours right away.
