Epic Games’ Response

After weathering a storm of controversy, Epic Games has finally released a statement regarding their failure to pay players.

In a statement to the community, the besieged developer released a statement apologizing for any trouble players in their past tournaments may have had receiving their pay, and discussed changes to prevent it happening in the future.

The proposed changes include increased proactivity in reaching out to players still waiting on pay, and a restructuring of their payments request flow to improve tracking and communication. The company also encouraged those still having trouble with payments in the next few weeks to email company Chief Operating Officer (COO) Daniel Vogel.

Epic Games Not Paying Players

The trouble began last week when Redditor “Returnoftruth” created a post in the competitive subreddit accusing Epic of failing to pay players for tournaments the company hosted, months after their conclusion. Players in tournaments as far back as the Summer Skirmish of last July had yet to see their promised payment for placing at the events, ranging from a couple hundred to several thousand dollars.

This left the internet furious as many wondered: “Is Epic Games Paying Players or not?”

While Epic’s official payout page states that a majority of its tournament participants had already been paid out, many in the community quickly called out the still staggering number of players still waiting on payments. According to their same page, almost 2,000 players have still yet to receive payment under the official category of “Waiting for Player Information”. Many participants have since come forward explaining they’d failed to submit their paperwork properly and were working with Epic to resolve the issue quickly.

While it’s likely a player here or there may have not submitted their payment information or done so incorrectly, it seems strange that such a high number have yet to be paid. The restructuring of their payment process suggests the paperwork was potentially spread across many loosely connected departments that overlapped yet were not in communication with each other.

This could have led to these departments thinking players had already been paid, when the opposite was the reality. It does, at least at the moment, appear that rumors of Epic Games not playing players were exaggerated.

While the situation is quite frustrating, it is relieving to see that it was simply clerical errors that were causing the failure to get players paid, and not something more sinister. If you’re still having trouble receiving your payment for an Epic hosted Fortnite tournament, you can reach Daniel Vogel at daniel.vogel@epicgames.com to try and resolve the issue.
