Elden Ring Will Let You to Put Off Boss Fights or Even Skip Them Entirely

The more we hear about Elden Ring, the more it sounds like a bona fide GOTY candidate. For the longest time we didn’t hear anything at all so the fact that we’re now being “bombarded” with so much interesting information is definitely a welcome change. This time around, Game Director Hidetaka Miyazaki spoke to Famitsu about the game’s overall difficulty and what fans can expect once Elden Ring hits the market on January 21, 2022. Seeing how this is a FromSoftware title, boss battles will naturally take center stage and, needless to say, Miyazaki gave us quite a lot to talk about!

According to Miyazaki, Elden Ring won’t be as stressful and challenging as Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Instead, it’ll be more akin to Dark Souls III in terms of difficulty. Then again, we’re talking about something that is extremely subjective, so take this as you will. Elden Ring will, however, feature some of the most taxing boss battles yet, so it definitely won’t be for the faint of heart!

Fortunately, there’s a catch!

You won’t have to face all of them. Only a select few will need to be beaten for you to advance in the campaign, with others being optional. Moreover, based on Miyazaki’s own explanation, there won’t be any linear sort of progression. By this we mean that you’ll be able to roam the map and take on challenges and boss battles in any order you see fit. We’ve already seen this executed perfectly in Zelda: Breath of the Wild and, frankly, it’s a truly marvelous concept. It gives the player a sense of freedom that cannot be found elsewhere. You’re really exploring the world at your own pace before stumbling upon a big baddie that’s probably two or even three times bigger than you are, with more HP than you can shake a stick at.

Still, the fashion in which one confronts these bosses tends to vary wildly from player to player. You can then take them on directly, sneak around and go for a surprise attack to catch them off guard, or just run for your life and hope for the best.

In any case, you’re the one dictating the pace of the game, and are free to do as you please. If things end up as expected, Elden Ring will no doubt enchant players in much the fashion as so many other FromSoftware games did in the past. And, well, we can’t wait to experience it all, grim and challenging though it may be!

Elden Ring is slated to release on January 21, so mark your calendars and, on the off-chance you haven’t already beaten FromSoftware’s most celebrated titles — the ones that really made this Tokyo-based developer famous across the globe — there’s perhaps no better journey for the winter ahead, than going for a deep dive into the grim and horrid imagination of Hidetaka Miyazaki!
