Doublelift Officially Retires from Professional League Play
One of the best Western players of all time Yiliang “Doublelift” Peng has decided to hang his mouse and keyboard and retire from professional play. This, as you can imagine, is quite a big hit for North America, and it comes mere weeks after Søren “Bjergsen” Bjerg decided to do the same.
A Legend in NA
Regardless of what you thought of this seasoned marksman, his talent, work ethic, and sheer longevity are undeniable. Metas came and went, but his effectiveness and impact never regressed or wavered. He’s the North American Martin “Rekkles” Larsson, although he doesn’t have nearly as impressive of a resume when it comes to international play. Still, what he lacks results-wise internationally, he more than makes up for in regional dominance. He’s won the LCS a staggering eight times.
That, in itself, is simply mind-blowing. And he’s done so wearing multiple different jerseys. Eight is also the number of times he was awarded the LCS MVP award, which only further solidifies his spot as the best North American player of all time.
If there’s a record over in North America, odds are, Doublelift holds it. And sure, we can talk about how the LCS isn’t the most competitive region around, but that in no way diminishes his incredible legacy and the mind-blowing accomplishments he was able to rack up over the years. Doublelift, simply put, is as big of a legend as they come, and now it’s time for him to move on and write a whole new chapter of his career.
No one’s quite sure what Doublelift has in mind when it comes to his future. His TwitLonger is more of a testimonial than a taxative list of things he wants to tackle going forward. Still, it’s a safe bet to assume that he’ll remain with Team SoloMid. Whether he’ll transition into coaching, become a streamer, or go for something else entirely is still unknown at the time of this writing. Either way, he’s almost certainly going to remain a staple presence in the field of competitive League — and that’s for the best.
With Doublelift opting to retire, this is truly the end of an era. We hope he’ll find as much success in his future endeavors as he did in professional play!
