The coronavirus, now known as COVID-19, has continued its rampage across the world this past week, leading to a slew of canceled or postponed esports events as developers and organizers scramble to protect their players and fans from the impact of the new disease.

The pressure continues to ramp up across the gaming world and beyond to find some way to halt the coronavirus spread. Here’s a coronavirus esports update on all of the recent cancellations and changes to events within the last week.

Canceled Tourneys and Online Play

Our first big cancellation last week came from the esports global capital of South Korea. The LCK postponed league play following the end of the first round robin due to the coronavirus spreading throughout South Korea.

It wasn’t the only big cancellation in League. Riot EU announced the LEC finals schedule for Budapest moved to the LEC Studio in Berlin due to its smaller size and smoother controllability.

Riot apologized to fans over the short notice of change in venue location. “This was not an easy decision to make, however, the health and safety of players, fans, and staff is our number one priority….We understand that this is a disappointment for fans, particularly those in Hungary, but we will look into options to bring the LEC to Budapest in the future.” Riot has yet to cancel the LCS Finals in Frisco, Texas, next month. However, they are keeping an eye on the situation there as well.

Outside of the League of Legends ecosystem, Rocket League developer Psyonix announced that the Rocket League Season 9 World Championship, scheduled for April 24-26 in Dallas has been canceled. SXSW in Austin, scheduled to take place this week, was going to host the eMLS Cup but has also been canceled.

The Pokémon European International Championship postponed its original April 17-19 showing in Berlin following the outbreak. There is no confirmed time frame for when they would eventually go through with it.

While not every upcoming esports tournaments have been canceled, the impact of coronavirus can still be felt in the many changes to how companies operate and how people can watch events. Blizzard moved their Hearthstone Masters Tour tournament to an online format. This is the tournament’s second move following the relocation to LA from Indonesia.

Elsewhere in the industry, CSGO tournament organizer FACEIT announced their FLASHPOINT League would still have its first event this week. The playoffs will take place in Los Angeles in April with the rest of the League instead of in Stockholm as initially planned.

EA also announced the cancellation of the Apex Legends Global Series and FIFA Global Series. Mortal Kombat developer Netherworlds closed their upcoming Final Kombat last-chance qualifier tournament in Chicago and banned a live audience from attending the main tournament.

With the spread of the disease increasing as time goes on and governments, particularly the US, failing to contain the outbreak properly, there’s a chance we’ll see more events postponed or canceled in the coming weeks.

We’ll continue to update you all as the coronavirus esports situation develops. Stay tuned and remember to take preventative measures to make sure you don’t catch it.
